What really is washing the ride

Sometimes I see the word “Washing “ used but only hear about it when they are talking about the ride cymbal. Actually, What is washing? Thanks

Its the opposite of ping. When you hit a ride theres two main noises, wash, which kinda sounds like when you crash a cymbal, and ping, which is what it sounds like when you hit, say the middle of the ride cymbal with the tip of your stick.

Ok, thank. Sometimes that sound after the ride is struck get loud and over shadow the stick ping sound.

Wash riding is when the drummer plays more on the edge of the ride therefore getting less ping and more of a roar. It is also called bash riding. Peace and goodwill.
