  • Made a Trade

I went to my old church, with the OK from the pastor, and made a big cymbal swap. One of my goals was to get the Sabian AA 16" and SR2 18" thin crashes to use at our current church. Here is what I now have:

    All Sabian

21" AA Bash Ride (my favorite of all time)

    18" XS20 Medium-Thin Crash ( sounds like a Sabian AA, really)

    17" AA Medium-Thin Crash

14" SR2 Hats (medium top, heavy bottom)

To Our Current Church (all Sabian except where noted)

    20 HHX Evolution Ride

    18" Zildjian K China

    18" SR2 Thin Crash

    16" AA Thin Crash

    15" SR2 Thin Crash

    13" Paiste Alpha Hats

    10" SR2 Splash

So I am no longer a small crash guy. This all worked out just as I was hoping. Peace and goodwill.

Yes, both churches are non-denominational but are similar to Assembly of God churches.

The XS20 and AA crashes blend well and have just the right pitch difference. Peace and goodwill.

          This was the actual trade.
I gave my old church these Sabians: 20" AAX Dry Ride, 16" AA Concept Crash, 17" and 19" AAX X-plosion Crashes.

I got these Sabians: 21" AA Bash Ride, 18" XS20 Medium-Thin Crash, 18" SR2 Thin Crash, 16" AA Thin Crash.

The XS20 Crash sounds way better than it is supposed to. Peace and goodwill.

Why did you swap the cymbals, Did the church want a different sound.

I wanted the Bash Ride and XS20 18" crash for me, and our new church is much smaller than the other one. So the thin crashes work better there in the smaller room. Peace and goodwill.

Here is a video of me playing the cymbals and my drums at an outdoor church service. I was also using the church's AA 16" Thin Crash. My son is the bass player. The music stars at about 2:35. Peace and goodwill.

Those are decent cymbals for playing in church. I've had several 16" Sabian AA Thin crashes and they are nice sounding cymbal. The others you got are very similar, but louder... but from watching you play it looks like you have pretty good stick control and are able to keep your volume down.

I have found that for indoor, small room & church playing that my 16" Sabian AA Sound Control crash together with a 16" Sabian AA El Sabor crash (similar, but darker tone) are slightly thinner than my 16" Sabian Thin Crashes and less obnoxious, which keeps the band, worship leaders, and sound guy happier because they don't bleed into adjacent mics as much. Until this summer, I've been using those crash cymbals for almost all my church playing for over 30 years.

This summer I finally upgraded to the ultimate small-room/church crash cymbals - I bought new 17" and 19" Sabian FRX crashes. Honestly, its the best money I think I have spent on my kit in a very long time. Fantastic for church playing because the obnoxious frequencies that crashes project (and people complain about) are simply not there, and they sound amazing. I can't say enough good things about them, and recommend them to anyone who plays in a typical small-church setting, if they have the budget for them.

Anyway, glad to see you playing and that your church is able to do outdoor "COVID-compliant" services.

Thanks for the replies. I liked playing that Bash Ride so much that I put it on the church drum set and took the HHX Evolution Ride home. Peace and goodwill.

Well, I liked the cymbals in the video so much that I took the ride and 17" and 18" crashes to church. So here is the current state of affairs.

This morning I ordered from Sweetwater a Sabian AAX 16" Concept Crash for $100 and an AAX 17" Concept Crash for $110. I just could not pass up the great deal. So the AA 16" Thin Crash will go back to church. I may bring home the SR2 15" Thin Crash, but I may leave it there if I can make it all work hardware wise. Peace and goodwill.

I got the Concept Crashes today. Man! Do they sound great. So here is my current, and I hope final, cymbal setup.

                            20" HHX Evolution Ride

                            17" AAX Concept Crash

                            16" AAX Concept Crash

14" SR2 Hats (medium top, heavy bottom)

They do not blend well with the SR2 15" and 18" Thin Crashes I already had, so I have extras. Peace and goodwill.

Well, the story continues. I made the mistake of taking the 16" and 17" AAX Concept Crashes to our Wednesday Night church service to try them out. They were perfect for that room, perfect. So they are still there. Here is how the situation is now.

                              Church Cymbals
                              21" AA Bash Ride
                              18" Zildjian K China
                              17" AAX Concept Crash
                              16" AAX Concept Crash
                              13" Paiste Alpha Medium Hats
                              10" SR2 Splash

                              My Cymbals
                              20" HHX Evolution Ride
                              18" SR2 Thin Crash
16" AA Thin Crash (used in the video above)
                              16" Wuhan China
14" SR2 Hats (medium top, heavy bottom)

Both sets of cymbals sound good. Peace and goodwill.
