  • Good cymbal set up? Tell me what you think

Ok so im getting a kit in the near future and i think i know what cymbals im getting:
    All Zildjian A Series
14" Mastersound hats (possibly rock, i cant decide)
    17" Rock Crash
    18" Medium Crash
    19" Medium Crash(not right away)
    and a 22" Ping Ride

Id also like to add a china and maybe a splash but right away im going to the the hats, 2 crashes and a ride. What do you guys think?

Its a great set up. For the splash idk, but for the china definately go for the Oriental China Trash.

I like the China High cymbals and maybe like a 10" or 12" splash, something quick but effective. THese wont be too soon either so i have some time to decide.

Looks great, but I personally don't think the A Rock crashes are too great. Make that 17" crash a Medium or Thin! For a china I would recommend the A China Boy high 16" or 18", they sound really fantastic! A 10" K Splash would blend well with the rest of your cymbals, but it's a pretty thin cymbal so perhaps you want to look into something else if you consider yourself a heavy hitter.

But why only Zildjian? Sure, they make some nice cymbals, but you're really just enclosing yourself from so many wonderful pies Sabian, Paiste, UFIP, Istanbul Agop, Meinl and others produce by sticking to one brand.

Yeah i know its close minded to do that but being this my first kit i just want to get good cymbals i know are quality and as i progress as a drummer and my tastes change, my cymbals probaby will too. I was also debating over the 17" Rock or Medium. And the stuff i listen to/want to play is kinda of heavy stuff with hard hitting drummers (ie. John Bonham, Dave Grohl, Dave Abruzees, Matt Cameron etc) so that is the kind of drummer i want to be.

I don't think it's a good idea to get an A rock crash (they're horrible imo), but other than that it looks pretty good. Maybe you could start with the 18" and 19" medium crashes (I have those two and they're really good together) and then get a 16" or 17" later if you want something brighter, or if you want something darker a 20" A medium thin or a 19" K. Personally I don't think I'm getting anything smaller than 18" anytime soon; I've had 16" and 17" crashes, but if you're a hard hitter the bigger ones just feel and sound so much better.
The 22" A ping ride is great, I'd totally get that if I were you (I am probably getting one when I get some money).
A mastersounds or rock hats? You can go either way, both are great hihats, but the mastersounds are probably the most versatile.
If you're getting a china I can recommend a 20" Oriental classic china. I have one and it's the best china I've ever laid ears on. The 20" A china high is also very nice...
A good splash could be either a 10" A or K, anything smaller would probably be too quiet compared to your crashes.

As are great cymbals. It all ooks good except for that ROCK crash. Dont know why but cymbals with that labeling are usually limited in sound. Get another medium.

Ok now ive narrowed it down to the medium crashes. Now i need a good starting combination. Ive read the 18 and 19 work well together but what about 17 and 18 or 17 and 19?

I wonder if this mercifulfate plays an alumimum snare?
