View Full Version : The Height Debate: How Tall Are You?

AussieDrums
12-03-2002, 09:05 PM
I was recently talking to a mate who works in a Biomechanics lab about the body size of drummers. I thought about the drummers and percussionists I know and students that I have taught, and realised that very few would be classified as being very tall, most between about 176-184cm in height (about 5'9"-6" for those of you living in Imperial World). Only one or two seemed to fall outside that narrow height range.

Soooo... curiosity got the better of me and here I am asking: How tall are you?

I won't bore you with the biomechanical reasons that my mate came up with as to why many drummers might be short, but I have heard that a few drummers like Gene Krupa and Max Roach were a little on the shorter side (not sure on that one).

The heights options provided are in imperial and metric to keep everyone happy. Conversion from inches to cm might be a little scratchy, just estimate how tall you are.

Thanks!

I am 6'5. Kind of a bummer when you want to play short peoples kits. The ONLY persons kit i was able to just sit down at and play with no adjusting anything was Ben graves from the Murderdolls. He is 6'6. All my friends are shorter then me. Joeys (Slipknot) kit was an issue too, i got used to it though, as long as i cranked the throne all the way up. Having size 17 feet does'nt help matters either.

I'm 179cm tall, it can be a sometimes, especially at school because all the other drummers are way (and I mean way) shorter than me.

6-2, 205, but I have my throne raised almost as high as it can go. My last instructor was about 5'4, so it was always interesing playing on his kit. My new instructor is taller, but he keeps his throne low and set back from the kit. I guess its ok though, cause its taught me how to adapt.

Anyone else ever heard this? Is it true?

If your in excellent shape, i dont think height will matter, but for the average person, short THIN people have an advantage because they have less mass in there legs to lift each time. Many a night i stood behind Joeys riser and watched the blur of his feet playing FAST 16th notes through an entire 4 minute song. Not an easy task for somebody 6'5 with big legs. Just the endurance alone is hard enough.

It matters little whether you're tall or short and playing kit, just remember that it is medically proven that shorter people out-live tall people. How many 90 year olds do you see the height of someone like Shaq O'neill?................NONE!

luvmydrumz
12-10-2002, 08:41 AM
I believe you on that. I'm 6'5 and I constantly hit my head on things. So I will probably die from some kind of head trauma. I've been in the emergency room twice from gashes to my head. The world is not set up for tall people. Although besides the low doorways, small airplanes, little beds and low chandeliers I love being tall. Being tall has its rewards as well as its pitfalls. Being a slow drummer is definitely not one of my problems.

krackbaby
12-10-2002, 02:11 PM
Far out...............6'5,you have tremendous height. Anyways, even though you say the world is not set up for tall people which is definately true in the cases that you mentioned, in many ways it is a tall man's world. Let's face it..........tall people are the ones who are considered more attractive....remember.........Tall, dark and handsome as opposed to short , fat and bald. Women certainly find height in men very appealing. It's psychological, they feel safer around a tall guy even though the guy might be 6'5 but a complete *****, they'll still feel safer with him in their simple little minds.
And as far as taller people not living as long as shorter people. It's definately true. Due to the effects of gravity, cardiac problems are much more common in taller people than they are in shorter people.

Hmm, i disagree. Your ankle doesn't contain any muscle (in comparison to your leg), therefore you're still relying on your leg to supply the power. Of course you use your whole leg.

I'd even go as far as to say tall people are at the advantage. Someone who is 6'5 will have bigger leg muscles than someone who is 5'5 and,(i'm pretty sure) they will be alot stronger. So having bigger muscles must be a good thing, because it means you can develop this muscle to its peak. Having smaller muscles means you are at a disadvantage, because you'll have to work harder to cover the same ground as someone with bigger muscles. Does this make sense? Or have i not explained clearly enough...

I can't believe this many people actually replied to this question? I can't see how height, weight, hair length, or anything else can effect your skills as a drummer. It's all about natural talent, practice and hard work.
By the way, I'm 6'0", balding, and need some practice.....heheheh.

Ummmmmmmmm...............that's actually incorrect. It is known that shorter people amass muscle a lot easier than tall people. Longer limbs = longer and streched muscles
Shorter limbs = a bigger concentration of muscle throught a shorter area.
Tall people are often thin where as shorter people are often stocky.
Hence why champion body builders tend to fall on the shorter side of the scale.

I'm 5' 11" and 190lbs (13st 7lbs for the Brit lads). My downfall as a drummer is that I have long, big built legs. With a knee injury and with my genetics being ****, I have a lot of skelatal problems (joints locking etc.) I sit quite a way back from my kit to keep my legs as free as possible (falling off the back of stages seems to be my weakness).

I'd have to agree. I'm 6'5 about 215lbs. I work out religously and it's hard to build huge muscles. My muscles are longer like krackbaby is talking about. Most musclemen or powerlifters are shorter.

I think peope put way to much empase(sp?) on height, and I mean with everything. Growing up it seems like everyone was obsessed with getting tall. I though i'd be about 6'4" or taller, but I only ended up about 6'2". I haven't grown more than a fourth of an inch since I was 15. I weigh 235 lbs, not fat, although I have a little gut. 5'11".. ever notice that golf clubs, for tall people are only 1/2" longer? or 1/2" shorter for 'short' people?.. and how a 6'2" guy can walk down the street and hold hands with his 5'4" girl friend?

means that our hands are very close to the same level, no matter what our height ( OK.. so BIG differences make a difference..) usually, adjusting the throne height and placement will get you in the ballpark on a strange kit.. unless the owner has some RADICAL set up.. like toms that are almost vertical and cymbals that are high enuf for Wilt the Stilt to reach...

hmm.. i was going somewhere with all this.. lost it.. must be old age..

Do you place your walker on a rack?;)

Actually, the "wingspan" of a human is supposed to match their height. My wingspan is a total of 2" shorter than it should be, so I'd never be a prototypical basketball player. Seem to be fine on the drums, though. My wife is about 5'5"... holding hands while walking down the street is a different thing. But I love her anyways :D :D

I'm 180cm (5'11') and 72kgs (158lb), which I actually forgot to add when I started this post. It's interesting to see the results. I play a kit (SRX... drool) with a 20" kick and the shallow tom sizes and I find that suits me just fine. Rock size kits are usually okay if I can move things around a little and increase the height of my throne. Especially after some tall bloke has been on it.

What size kit/toms do some of you shorter or taller guys use?

I'm 6'. I don't see what the big deal is with height for drummers. It's important for guitarists and singers. You can't have a bunch of 6-6'5" guitarists and have a 5'4" singer. It just looks so ridiculous. I know, I know, the music is the thing. But not when you're on that stage. Everything matters. People like perfection, and perfection is everybody around the same height, thin, and toned with good hair.

Sad but true.

H erecently borrowed a throne of mine...... this led to a discussion about how we sit at a kit depending on your size.

As far as we could tell, the shorter you are the higher you have your stool.

The old man is nigh on standing upright when he sits down - where as I sit pretty low.

Why would that be?

Whoa, too many details there.

I'll jump on the bandwagon, I'm 5'6" (and when I last got measured with shoes on 171 cm), 130 lbs., and 12 years old. My feet are size 9 so I will probably end up about 5'9" or 5'10" when I am fully grown.

im shorter so i like to play everything more compact. like toms super close and snare and cymbals like crammed together.

but taller drummers i know play everything all spread out and sit farther back

05-20-2003, 03:53 PM
im 5'11'' and sit very high at my set up, i still like everything very tightly set up and also quite low in relation to how some players set up (cymbals way up in the air etc) - i have nothing above my shoulder-height at all..

6'5" here , my toms are set up very low , as is my snare, people who set at my kit who are under 6' tall often complain that my toms are low ... but i like it that way

OK bubba's... I'm 5'4" tall & 210lbs W/ 17" biceps, 24" quads, 48" chest & can pick up or destroy damn near anything in my way!
I am a human wrecking ball, so don't believe the height!

P.S. Plumbing is my day job so I'm constantly picking up & carrying Toilets, bath tubs, hot H2O heaters & other heavy ****. Plus, being that I'm short, I never hit my head (unlike the guy I work w/) & can usually stand up in crawl spaces. So for me it's a plus!

When my posture is good Im almost 6'4",But thanks to rugby I have a bad back - they used to call me giant killer cos' I always made a beeline for 6'8/9" locks and dump tackled them cos I weighed about the same as them. The problems start when they tackle you back.

My body is weird though. I only have size 11.5(uk) feet and my shoulders are a bit too wide.

5'6"(168cm) tall, 140lbs(63kg) and men's size 7(about size 41-42 in Europe) in shoes, I'm able to play most kits comfortably unless their throne is really high.

6,1.5" size 12-13 shoe (UK) but it tell you this, I find it so hard to get comfortable on kits other than my own i have quite long legs so its a disaster playing gigs with thrones that dont adjust

6'2" and 205, size 12 1/2 shoe.

I don't think I sit TOO high, I know plenty of shorter drummers that are practically standing at their kits.

I'd also wager that seat height is largely dependent on if you use double bass or not. You can sit REALLY high with one pedal since you can put a lot of your weight on the free foot (think Meg White).

6'3", 235lbs. I love playing drums, but I'm also into bodybuilding. I sit pretty low at my kit. Considering my size, I play pretty small sized drums that I keep in pretty tight around me. A guy thats 5'6" could probably play my kit and not to adjust very much. Its just what I'm comfortable on.
