Hi,
Here's a unique snare build that I put together last summer (as a prototype) in order to test out using an 8" snare drum with floor tom legs along with my cajon bass drum. The snare is made from a 4-lug Pearl Decade Maple 8x7 tom. Due to the two air vents from the Opti-Loc system, the build required offsetting the snare butt and strainer and the floor tom leg brackets.
I played a few unplugged church gigs this past fall using this little snare drum along with a cajon (with bass drum pedal) and a hi-hat. I never like mounting a little snare drum from the hi-hat, so this version with the legs worked out better for me. I'm currently working on a new version of this snare using a 5-lug Pearl 8" tom from the MCT series.
The snare is the perfect size for a cajon because it produces a real snare sound but with limited volume and a nice muted low pitch (due to the depth).
