I love that black matte, make me wonder if I should get that instead of Bombay Sparkle or the Natural Matte that I have on order

The Matte Black is a great finish. It looks classy and won't go out of style. :)

I love the black matte finish here, I may have to get one down the road.

And by that, he means "I may have to get one as soon as my new kits arrive".

Funny, I finally ordered one in the matte black because I love this finish. I got the shell pack but I plan on outfitting it with hanging floor toms in the future as they travel easier.

Cuznred,

Which shell pack did you get? That's a great color.

I plan on putting together a little gigging kit with the MCT matte black shells.

I ordered the standard 10x7 12x8 16x16 22x18 I found out you get better pricing when you order the pre-configured shell pack rather than a la carte sizes. From there I plan to special order the 13x11 and the 15x13 to use as hanging floor toms and probably the 14x14 to go with the 16x16 if I decide to use that. May also get a shallower 22 down the road as well as they are easier to get into my car. with that I can have a variety of set up ups depending on the gig and room.

10/13/15/22
10/12/13/15/22
13/16x16/22
12/14/16/22

The sky is pretty much the limit with those sizes

Cuznred,

You think like I do. I always buy a bunch of sizes so I can put them in different configurations.

It's too bad some of the sizes have to be special ordered. But, I guess it's nice that they offer the full range of sizes at a good price (compared to Masterworks or Reference).

when are you ordering yours??? The build quality of these drums is unmatched and you cannot beat the price on these with anything else out there. I am surprised I am not seeing more of these kits. These blow away the mcx series

Cuznred,

i agree. I put a Masterworks order in for some of the same Matte Black #124 finish drums back in September. The only reason I didn't just go with the MCT shells is because there's no variety of snare drums. I like having 12" and 13" snare drums, so I went with MW for the main kit.

However, I ordered some of the stock MCT shells in the Matte Black in order to make some custom smaller set ups. At least they will match my MW kit. I should be getting the shells this week and then I'll have to do some custom modifications on them.

One of the builds I'm planning with the new MCT shells will be a "Martini" kit with 14x12 kick, 10x13 floor, and 8x8 tom. I have a 5x12 Sensitone Steel snare drum that I'll use along with it. It will be about 1/3 the cost to do this special kit with the #124 MCT shells than it would have been to add it to a Masterworks order.

I've always thought it would be fun to do a "Martini" kit but wouldn't use it enough to justify a MW investment. I"m hoping the wife will like it enough to let me set it up in the living room with some "silent" heads and "quiet" cymbals. The matte black will match some of her decorating ...

It's cold where I live, so it might take a month or two for me to be able to get out in the shop and do the custom work. I just wanted to pick up the shells while they are still in stock. I wouldn't be surprised if they replace the matte black with piano black after NAMM in January. I'm sure the matte black won't stay in stock very long.

Fortunately, Pearl also makes 14" marching bass drum hoops in the same finish so I'll be able to use those to match the 14x12 tom for the little kick drum. I also have to order some custom bass drum heads from Remo since they don't stock standard bass drum heads the 14" size. It will take a couple of months to get those from Remo too.

Years back, Al Percival told me that the #124 finish made for non-Masterworks drums does not match the #124 finish applied to MW drums. Do you think that has changed, or do you think the difference is minor?

It's the same.

However, there are now different versions of "matte black." There is also a satin version and a caviar version.

The satin version is used for the "Modern Utility" snare drums and doesn't show any of the wood grain. There is also a glossy version of the back showing the wood grain which was used for the wood Firecracker snare drums and the club cajon.

There might be some confusion because the #124 is called "matte black" and "black mist." I can't tell the difference between samples of the "satin black" and the "caviar black" either.

well I hope they don't replace the matte black because I want to get some component drums

They'll probably have stock for a while since most people just buy the shell packs. However, I would imagine they will swap some colors (but previous colors will probably be available by special order for a while). We'll see.

Which component sizes are you thinking about adding to your kit?

Cuznred,

My shells for the MCT "Martini" kit are supposed to arrive at the end of the week.

I hope I can get a warm day sometime over the holidays to work on the kick drum. It will need to be drilled for spurs, a JG-16 mount (riser), a BT-3 tom mount, and the additional holes for the CL-250 bass drum lugs to accommodate the matching hoops and bass drum claws.

I also have to drill one of the toms for floor tom leg brackets.

It is really good to hear how much you like the MCT kits, CUZNRED. I know you weren't sure when you set up the first one.

In the 2019 NAMM thread I mentioned that I would prefer fully finished hoops so I have a dealer looking into it. I love my MCT kit and decided to customize mine instead of moving up for now. I already replaced all the tension rods to stainless except the bass drum so far. The rods for the bass drum are like $10 each. I have 22x16, 10x7, 12x8, 16x16 and matching 14x5.5 snare. I plan to get a 14x14 also as going from the 12" tom to 16" is like falling in a well so the 14" would really even it out. These drum really resonate.

I enjoy posts from you both, MusicMan & CUZNRED. Thanks!

Thanks, these are my favorite drums in a long time. I think Pearl really got it right with these shells and I hope they are around for a while. My next stop is building one with 22x16 10x9 12x10 14x12 AND 16x13 hanging floors. Will do that one in ether matte natural or the matte black. I love the way the toms resonate and project in this series. They are also very easy to tune up

You might as well special order the whole new kit since all of those sizes are backorder only at this point.

awwww that sucks! Is pearl dropping the line? I hope they don't, I also hope they don't change it either. I prefer the super hoops to the die cast as they let the drums resonate more. The thinner shells also help with this. If anything Pearl needs to market the **** out of these drums, because they are the best deal out there right now. I dumped 2 Yamaha Maple Hybrids for these, people thought I was nuts, but to me the Pearls are the sound I am after.

You can still backorder it. If you have some of the money for it now, a dealer might let you order it with a deposit so you don't have to pay for it all at once. :)

Cuznred,

I'm checking on this. A couple weeks ago, there were a lot of the sizes still in stock in various colors. It might just be a glich in the inventory results. I just ordered a 10x7 last week and it shipped yesterday and I know there was more than one of them left when I ordered it.

However, it still remains that some of the sizes (e.g. 12x10, 13x11, 14x12F, 15x13, 15x14, 16x14F) were always a special order and not stock sizes.

Cuzred,

As soon as the 2 feet of snow melts and we get some decent weather, I'll get some pictures of the MCT "cajon kit" (#124 Matte Black) I've been working on.

I just finished converting an 8x7 tom into a little snare drum (with legs) and also a 10x10 tom into a floor tom (with legs).

So stoked to see that!!!! I am so overdue for pics of my new kits, I plan on getting things set up and photographed this weekend. So many new things

I've been experimenting with different configurations at church gigs over the past few months and finally settled on the best pedal and little cymbals.

I also customized a Pearl PBC-507 cajon with an internal mic and pedal attachment to use for the bass drum (and throne). It really works and sounds great.

I play at church sometimes too..... with the drums I have now I have some set up options

10 up top 12 and 14 on a tom stand in floor tom spot
10 and 12 up top 14 and 16
12 rack 16 floor

I also want to get an 18" kick for small rooms and a 13x11 then I can go 10/13/14 with the 18 kick

The regular kit at the church where I play is 22x18B, 16x16F, 14x6S, and 12x8T. However, we've been doing acoustic sets more often lately where I get to experiment with the cajon kit. I've been able to try several different pedals, mics, and different combinations of cymbals.

Ported the kick with a 4 inch hole on the black mist kit and it made a world of difference. The kick now has that punch I was looking for with the right amount of boom + resonance. There may be hope. Now onto the 10 and 12
