I am very excited about this new direction Pearl is taking. Being able to acquire a Ref/Ref Pure kit/add-ons so quickly in an immense number finish choices is amazingly cool. Thanks Pearl!

Agreed. Love the miore and oyster choices, which is strange for me to say since I really didn't care for those types of wraps when I was younger.

I agree that this is a great thing! Only wondering whether they are only going to offer chrome hardware, or if you will have a choice. I just purchased a ref with black hardware, and would be excellent if I could order add ons for the kit!

I am considering following in my New Zealand friend's footsteps and adding a gong bass drum after my other house is sold. :) Afterwards, I will consider purchasing a Ref Pure Jazz-sized kit for a lighter gigging kit.

Agree, this is a nice idea, and should get plenty of attention. I hope it becomes a big success, so Pearl will add more shells into the mix.

I was wondering as well. In the video they put out, the wrap is on but no hardware and it looks very flush to the shell, like it has been glued the whole way around. But it could just be a very good job with a taped seam.

I would like to hear the answer to this.

Not to disparage the request for info, but my 1988 MX is wrapped. Its been my primary kit up until about 2010 and gigged plenty. Wrap looks as good as the day it was purchased. No bubbles, discoloration, lifted seams, or anything. Just to say, taped wrap doesnt have to be poorly applied or have a short life span. And its much easier to rewrap a taped wrap shell than glued.

YMMV.

I'd be willing to bet that it's fully glued.

Two years ago I got into my first set of Reference Pures in piano black and honestly, after a while they just didn't speak to me. I'm a vintage guy and have other brands in these cool wraps, but I was really wishing Pearl would do something like this. When they did I went out of my way to let my Pearl guys know this was something I could totally stand behind. I love the Ref Pures, and now with a wrap I'm totally happy. I'm ordering my kit ASAP. The concept of the Ref Pure shells still blows my mind, so to make them look more traditional to me is total icing on the cake. Well done Pearl! My $$$ is coming ;)

Answer:
A) raw shells - CNC drilled hand-assembled here in Nashville
B) wrap is taped but it is a super quality delmar / rowlux wrap and "each" drum is inspected so you will not see any wrap bubbling and air pockets.

My question and playinpearls question was "Can you buy/order the raw MCC ref/ref-pure shells drilled for hardware but not have WRAP applied?" ... MCC has sizes I want but I'm not a wrap guy. I don't want to special order sizes and lacquer finish I want.

If shells can be ordered RAW without wrap option I'm good to go.
If wrap is applied with strips of tape at seam then I'm good to go and I'll order through MCC and remove wrap myself.
If wrap is taped entirely to shell then my questions are void

You cannot purchase the ref/ref pure raw shells

To purchase one of the Music City Custom kits, you must:
A) choose from reference and/or reference pure components (no mixing hardware / shells)
B) choose standard shell depths and sizes from 8"-24" (no custom depths e.g. 10x7.25) :D
C) choose from 29 of the Delamr / Rowlux wrap finishes including classic sparkles, vintage Pearls and Satin Flames.

Yes we use double sided tape but it is so tight top and bottom and with the new quality premium delmar / rowlux wraps there is absolutely no movement or air pockets they actually look like the entire shell was glued and not taped. These Music City Custom drums really come out nice.

This is Satin Gold Moire.

Amazing, indeed! Reminds me of a raging forest fire! Thanks for snapping that pic, Al! These pictures reinforce the point that the catalog pictures don't do the finishes justice! Okay. I misread the catalog entry. I thought those were standard shell-pack configurations, instead of sample configurations. I didn't realize you could order a la carte. I'll definitely keep this in mind for my next kit! ;)

Yes as I understand it, Music City Custom has to be at least three drum purchase (e.g. kick, tom, floor) to make a kit. It can be as small as a three piece up to a 50 piece kit. :D :D :D :D

Actually I'd love to see someone order a monstrosity of a kit in the Music City Custom line just to see if we can keep to the 14 business day delivery from Purchase Order placement. :D
