View Full Version : Thoughts on new Masters badges?

IMO it looks a lot better than the MCX/BCX badges which look like they belong on a basketball cap. BUT it looks kind of cluttered, lots of shapes with a half oval at the top, an oval for the overall shape, a rectangle for "Maple Complete" with some shape underneath that. Also not that it looks "cheap" but these wouldn't look out of place on a set of Visions.

http://i.imgur.com/0r2524Y.jpg

But they all pale in comparison to the old MMX ala late 90's early 00's badges. These look like pure class, which they should be! Big gold badge with a really nice type font and very un cluttered. What are your thoughts?

Totally agree with every point. The black oval over the masters script and the rectangle serve only to clutter what could have been an elegant design. However it is an improvement. The old gold rectangular badge was by far the best.

Honestly I wish they just left the square badges, they look great on drums as side on drums look like a square anyway. DW has hardly changed their badges and no one complains about that. Ford has NEVER changed their badge in the 100 odd years they have been around! Get it right and then leave it

Rectangle Badges!

And i agree with OP, they look better then the previous Masters badges. Very Reference like if you ask me...

I've never liked Masters Series badges, including the new one. The recently replaced baseball style badge is the one I prefer of the three if I had to choose one. Reference and Masterworks badges are lovely though to my eyes. Among the best in the industry--top tier just below the Tama high end decal/painted badges.

The masterworks badge is timeless and has been unchanged for over 17 years, pray they never change it.

Put me in the camp in favor of mw and ref badging. Both are very tasteful and right up there with my favorites of all time. I just don't understand the busy scheme of the new badge and also agree that blue is a color that doesn't contrast well with many other colors. I'd never not buy a kit due to the badge but it sure helps tie the whole thing together.

I honestly thought they were going to go with one of the old-school gold badges like they did with the session studio classics.

It seems pearl does these awesome throwbacks, starting with the session studio classic's, then the crystal beats, then most recently they did the wood/fiberglass… I think it would be sweet if they brought it back to the original Masters series. An updated style with a nod to the past.

Same.

Really the Masters haven't changed since 1993. Bridge lugs, optimounts, thick maple/birch shells and gyro lock arms. I have an original Dennis Chambers snare from the 90's, the lugs are the same as my brand new BCX!

I don't like it. Why they put the blue on it. It would look nice and classy with golden oval shape and black/brownish lettering.

Looks like a cheap Vision badge now. Not judging yet but oh dear this whole new Masters thing.

I don't mind them too much. Design-wise there are some positives, and some negatives.

I like the round black sections at the top and bottom of the badge... They are a reflection of the shape of the badge; they create an interesting effect where the central section of the badge sort of resembles a drum shell (as seen from the inside); and are a bolder, more modern-looking take on a design element from Pearl's Philharmonic series badges:

490680

The blue lettering is a very odd choice, though, and the rectangle around "Maple Complete" clashes with the overall oval theme... Not sure what they were thinking with those two elements.

The old badges were great, MCX; not so great. This new badge looks cheap. Also, the model line sounds too much like Yamaha.

The old rectangular badges were okay. The MCX badges grew on me to the point I preferred them over the rectangular ones.

The new ones are hideous. I don;t like the blue and they are too busy.

Hey! I think that 2nd picture is of a snare I used to own! I got it locally from Craig's List and that is the image the seller used to advertise the drum and then I posted that image here back when I got it in 2006 or 2007.

I love the oval badges. But the lettering is weird. I'd like it if they took the old 1990's era masters square gold badges and simply made them oval. Similar to the masterworks and reference badges. Synergy guys. If pearl is the best reason to play drum, their brand identity should reflect that.

I can't recall this much scrutiny over a badge design for any other brand/series. I agree with some of the points made. The blue is odd looking but I don't hate the new design.

I think a revamp of the old square badges but in an oval shape would have been better, giving a nod to the classic Masters I grew up lusting for.

Maybe Pearl should hold a voting contest for customer approval before entering a new badge design into production....

If you looked closely enough, you'd have run across a great debate about those hideous Saturn badges that is still keeping Sticks up at night. This badge debate pales in comparison...so far. Love the Music City badges, and they work with just about any finish.

This doesnt work because it has blue on the badge, red on the optimounts, yellow on the lugs and green as the finish. At any time you've got at least 3 colours going on. Then adding the finish makes it 4. Basic colour theory, which is one of the first things a designer learns dictactes that the more colour you use, the busier the finish looks. It's not rocket science. Also, if you have demon drives, you got orange thrown into the mix as well. Your drumkit starts to look like a clown's pants.

490875

I simply took the blue out - much better.

490876

Change it to the old gold style, which matches the lug gaskets, which is also much better.

The more I look at the new badges, the more I have to agree the colored lettering of the "masters" logo has the ability to clash with the color of the kit. I'd be very very supportive of a gold or silver badge with simple black lettering.

I know its pedantic, but its my job to make sure stuff matches, and I feel most designers try to embrace minimalism. I just think these drums have too many colours going on.

That being said, its likely I wouldn't even notice in real life. Stuff tends to look a lot better in the flesh than in a product photo.

The great AL replied in my thread, oh the joys!

The oval is great, ovals look choice on the Reference/Masterworks. It's just very cluttered, lots of shapes going in INSIDE the oval badge. I know its about how drums sounds but if you're spending that kind of coin on an instrument... she's gotta look good. Drums have advanced to the point where a set of Exports will do anything people want, Masters is "I am spending extra to have something special"

Regardless of the colors and scripts, they are way too big. On the smaller sizes, especially, they nearly touch 4 lugs!! Even the classic Masters badge everyone loves is too big. My Masters and Session Select had large rectangles that detracted from the shells. I never thought much off it until I had other kits with much smaller badges. The perfect one for me now is the one I have, a small Keystone doubling as the vent. Understated elegance.

I think pearl could have had a really fresh and classy badge direct from the artwork they are currently using for the 70 year anniversary.
1. Take the # 70 away
2. Clear the banner at the bottom
3. Add proper series name in banner
4. Keep the circular shape.
5. Silver/gold color ??? On aluminum.
Just a thought.....

I haven't liked a Masters badge since the early 2000's,though the baseball style one did grow on me a bit since it at least wasn't a cluttered mess.

Of course, I haven't really liked masters kits since that time period either. They used to be a great range with great options. Now if you want a high end maple or birch kit from pearl with plenty of size and finish options you've basically got masterworks. It's sad really.

We have the new Masters Maple Reserve with an ultra-thin 5.4mm shell thickness with maple re-rings (like the old Masters MMX or Masters Premium MMP) available in any of the former Masters Premium finishes and surprisingly affordable.
