What snare drum(s) do you use? What do you like about it(them)? I have a Pearl 4.5 x 14 Mirror Chrome Steel Snare. I like it's visual appeal and the overall sound is just cool. What about you?

I have a 5.5X14 brass Sensitone and a 3X13 maple piccolo. Both Pearl, and both sound great. I've been using the piccolo for almost all of my playing lately. I just love the sound I get from it. As for the Sensitone, I love the drum, and it has great applications, but I don't have any reason to use it right now. Maybe when I start recording again. But I'll tell you one thing: I'm not letting it out of my site! :)

Hey all - I am new here...
this is my first post!

I have an old 9x14" wood TAMA superstar
- might be early '80s and I think its birch...?

I looked all over for a full sounding snare, I didn't really know what I was looking for, and didn't have any make in mind; I just tested many at several stores and judged by what I thought of the sound.
I ended up finding this one on a shelf among several used snares at a big music store in Toronto several yeas ago...
I hadn't seen anything like it as far as modern snares go.
I love the sound of it - and it is very clean and easy to tune with no dampening.

Can anyone give me a good link to info or an other thread with tuning info and techniques?
- I fully admit that I am self taught and may not be doing everything right...
I would like to know more about how to control ring and buzzing of the strainer...
thanks.

Man, I tell you what. Women (who aren't drummers) do not comprehend the appreciation of having multiple snare drums in your arsenal, not my wife anyway. I tried using the comparison of like how many women have a closet full of shoes, maybe several pair that only get worn with that "certain outfit", while others are more versatile and can be interchanged between several outfits. She understood that, but came back with,"yeah, but I can buy a whole lot of shoes for the price of just one snare drum", which is correct, however, it's all about the sound you're going for. As of right now my snares are:

3x13 6-ply Pearl maple piccolo(great all around drum)
5.5x14 Pearl Bronze sensi-tone (very sweet)
6.5x14 Pearl steel shell w/CL-65 lugs(nice rock drum)

About the bronze snare, I just got it a couple of days ago at Music-Go-Round. It is in absolute pristine mint condition, original factory heads and everything on this baby, hardly any marks on the batter head at all, virtually flawless. I had to pry it out of this one dude's hands, who is a regular customer such as myself at this store, because when he saw it he was thinking the same thing I was and took it home on loan to try out on his kit before he bought it. The manager called the guy at home to see if he was goung to buy it or not and he was a bit hesitant about bringing it back, but he allowed me to purchase this nice drum. I actually traded some old gear for it so no out of pocket expense for me but the selling price was $139.00 . Sorry if I rambled a bit. Cheers!

..... My wife calls it a disease! :D

My wife has got sooooo use to me buying stuff and saying "This
is the last thing I'll ever need...", she just now says "Yeah Whatever!"

I saw a cute sign hanging up at a local Guitar Center drum shop.
Over the counter in BIG bold letters it read

"Your wife just called and said you can buy anything you want!" :D

Man, that is so TRUE! When I'm at the drum shop for an extended period of time, which is usually every time I go, whenever the phone rings back in the drum dept. I say "if it's for me, tell my wife I've already left". She's never called there before, though. I've got a really nice setup right now and couldn't possibly need anything new......until..next week, or....day after tomorrow at least. You're right, it is a disease. What's it called, though?

My only snare is an older version (single-flange hoops) Pearl Brass Sensitone, 6.5 X 14, thaqt has quite a similar sound to the Ludwig Black Beauty.

My next snare is going to be the new Pearl Concert Snare; it's maple with tube lugs, and I think I'll do a 5 x 14" for that one.

Most of my playing is jazz, or acoustic stuff, and I'm not generally looking for gunshot cracks--just a great warm WHAP, and a good rimshot for accents. No complaints with my current drum on either score.

5.5x14 DW Maple Craviotto, Great workhorse. I like the Thick "Pop" of it.

5.5x14 Brass Sensitone, Great overall metal snare. I like the higher frequencies, sensitivity is has and nice crack.

5.5x14 6ply Maple Cadeson, Good club snare drum. In some bars,it sounds even better than my Craviotto!?? Go figure

5.5x14 Pearl 50th Ann, Prettiest snare drum ever - Period. Sound wise, it's a good, not too loud and warm drum (Perhaps due to the claw and hook rims. I yet have to try it with ordinary die cast or flanged hoops.

3.5x14 Yamaha Garibaldi Sig Brass, Excellent studio drum. Very sensitive. 3 small vents gives it a more "airy" and open sound.

5.5x12 Steel Cadeson, Very high pitched and funky (even when tuned low) Excellent auxiliary snaredrum. It has a clear "POP" and is has just enough overtone.

And my newly bought Fender Deluxe Fat Strat in RWneck and 3color sunburst....

I have these, and here's what I think:

Tama Starclassic maple 14x6.5 (British racing green) Great tuned high - cuts with 'thunk' and body too!!!

Premier Signia Brass 14x7. Versatile, cutting, loud, not over-ringy.

Yamaha FRP (Fibre glass re-inforced plastic) 14x5.5 (transparent green) Love it- no damping, tuned high with 10 mil head it cuts and just rings absolutely the right amount. Great for fast stuff / blast beats.

Yamaha Manu Katche hip gig 12x5 wood (Silver) Tight!!! Really funks up parts - highly recommended second snare. I use it for the main snare at times and it really does not get tired the way 'effects' snares can when you use them all of the time.

Arbiter AT 14x5.5 Maple / brass. I'm getting rid of this. The autotune system is cool, just hitting the head with one hand and tuning with the other takes 10 seconds at most! BUT, I can't get a higher tone out of it, no matter how high I tune it (even with thin heads) and it does not extand my options - the starclassic covers this range, and with better tone. FOR SALE!!!

What next? Tama Starclassic or brass or copper 14x4...or a bell brass!!! But then I like the Ultracast, and Noble and Cooley...:)

What I meant was the three Tama types in 14x4 - this is now the Tama pic size - they have scrapped the 3.5 depth. A NC solid shell 3.75 would be nice. I also used a 12x5 Firecracker steel today- I did like!!! I dont wanna go big/deep as my stuff is much faster now (blast beats /16ths on kicks at 220bpm plus, etc.)

I think the whole vent thing seems to be an American absession- here in the UK it is not really something that you see- although OCDP etc are only just starting to come through. I shall have to have a look.

nice and simple for me, and surprisingly all pearl !

10" fire cracker ( steel ) tuned low to sound like a snare

14" standard forum snare ( i sold the kit but kept the snare )

14" steel pro snare circa 85/86 ( this is the one )

those who have'nt played a forum snare will be pleasantly surprised. took a while, but i got it tuned nicely with the stock heads, although, with a coated ambassador it sounded much better.

the 10" firecracker surprised me once i got the sound right, i often use it as a main snare, but it will be used mainly as aux hanging from the hi-hat/ISS mount to be used while playing modern pop / rock / punk stuff.

the 14" pro steel really is what a classic steel rock snare should sound like , just wonderful.... loud, and only in the larger venues do i need to mic it

Ian

p.s. PLEASE . if you have a Rogers COB dynasonic (70's) , I have serious cash waiting, i need one to complete my londoner kit.... thanks

5x14 dw workshop series brass nickel plated shell/black hardware

5.5x14 premier olympic steel shell (one word: versatile)

5x14 cb steel shell (surprising crack cranked insanely tight)

i looked into the premier, and based on the badge i think it was made somewhere around late 70's/early 80's. i'd like to know, just out of curiosity. it's my close backup in those times when the dw doesn't quite fit. as far as the third drum goes, i'm thinking of finding it a new home.

Pearl 5.5x14" Brass Free Floater (with alternate maple shell)
Pearl 5.5x14" Mahogany Classic Limited Edition (current fav)
Noble & Cooley 7x14" Maple (previous fav)

All diecast hoops.

I was never really all that "in love" with the FFS (with either shell). I think the large aluminum "bed" reduces a lot of the resonance from this otherwise beautiful drum.

I wish I had a 6.5x14" MHXL, but the 5.5" drum came with the (new) kit and I don't think I can justify another snare just for that extra 1" in depth right now. <sigh>

I'm thinking about ordering a Maple 7x12" (M-1270) as an "effects" snare with a custom finish to match my kit... they sound/look like a lot of fun!

Giambatista, what do you think to the starclassic 14x4? I have the 14x6.5 and am looking for a piccollo to add to my collection (posted earlier.) I want a piccollo with a bit of thickness, so I'm looking at wood, not metal and this way i can get one to match my kit. Your thoughts?

Cheers.

DW 14" by 6" collectors series maple snare, 10 plies with 6 ply reinforcement and a Pearl Sensitone 14" by 5,5" snare. The DW is the main snare, and the pearl is cranked way up there and played as auxillary snare. Both sound good in all tuning ranges, pherhaps the DW sounds better than the pearl when tuned low.

I currently gig with 2 kits (not at the same time).

My snares are:

14*5 red brass free floater (matches my red BLX kit) UK Anniversary special edition snare
14*6.5 Customer Classic (liquid Amber finish gold hardware) as it matches the gold hardware on my main MMX kit

Spares (some waiting to be sold)
14 *5.5 Chad Smith - great all round drum
14*6.5 Custom Classic (Regular) my old main snare
14*6.5 Mapex Hammered Phosphur Bronze - nice tone.

I like them all for different reasons!! The Pearl Custom Classics are my all time favs though.

Wow.

Got my 14x5 Export snare and a 14x5 CB steel snare.
What a joke.

Soon upgrading to:
Tama Starclassics G-Maple 12 ply, 10 mm 14x5.5,
Huston 14x4 20-ply Maple in blue satin finish(custom built for me! yay.)
Probably a 14x3.5 Brass Free-floater, and maybe a maple shell to switch out sometime.

Oh, those Pork Pie 12x5's are BAD drums. Played one at Guitar Center(with some paragon hats, sweet combo) and the pop was wicked. I was excited about playing it until I looked at the price tag.

....f#@k, thought maybe I could get a deal. I'll put that $500 towards a perfect custom built drum.

Pearl 5.5 * 14 MMX in natural finish
Pearl 5 * 14 Ultracast snare

I owned a Omar Hakim sig, but i ''''''ed it up making vents in it... Yeah, shame on me, but it's cheaper than order a very expensive OCDP snare and still not liking it.. I buy it again sometime, it was a very nice snare....

I'm planning to buy a 7 * 12 saprano snare in emerald fade, or the Omar Hakim... any suggestions?

I voted Pearl cause my main snare is a Pearl EX poplar, but I've also got a Ludwig chrome and an Atomic steel snare.
