Default Octobans

Well, its that time of the year again: Christmas-time! My parents want to get me something for Christmas (they know I love drums and drum gear, so why ask ) and since they didnt know what to get me, they asked and I suggested octobans. I love the way they sound, and theyre very unique. Plus, I already plan on ordering a few crashes, and the octobans will be more expensive, so they can pay for those

I need some sound clips of different octobans, preferably the high and the low pitched plus maple vs. acrylic. Any help would be appreciated, and rep (for what its worth) is up for grabs.

i have never heard of maple octobans.

there are aluminum "octabans" made by pearl called quarter toms
Pearl Quarter Toms feature 6" diameter aluminum shells in 12", 15", 18", and 21" lengths and can be tuned to specific pitches for playing melodies or used as highly-focused effects drums with extreme cut and projection.

thens theres tama the originators of these

One of TAMA's first original instruments, TAMA Octobans have been played by progressive players from Simon Phillips to Stewart Copeland to Mike Portnoy. Octobans change pitch by using shell length instead of shell diameter. The 6" diameter shells can be tuned melodically and are available in low, high pitch 4pc set and high pitch 2pc set(new).

Thanks for the info. I love the unique sounds and looks that come from kits with octobans. What im really looking for is sound samples-I know how octobans sound in general, I just need to hear how different kinds sound.

I'm just guessing, but probably a nice price for Tama ones too...

What gear are you using? My opinion is cymbals/stands or a nice new snare drum are more valuable additions to a real working set up, than what are (for most people) "novelty" items. I mean in all reality, with a few exceptions, how many people can usefully incorporate octobans into their gigging set up? Not dissing those that CAN, but just my thoughts...

Hey, I have a quick question. When I went to HK last christmas with my family my brother and I and some of our friends we met there would hang out a street market, but I forget what it's called! There was a soccer field really close to it and they were doing construction next to it, if that helps. It was also really close to some water.

Cool man.

My wife has got me a gift voucher from Billy Hyde Drumcraft (Sydney) for christmas too.

My parents are getting me a pair of Shure E2c's.

I'm in a different boat - I've got pro gear (MRX 10/12/14/16/22 in natural maple, CZX snare, all top end Zildjian, DW pedals, heaps of hardware + a Gibraltar rack in the cupboard), but I gig a fair bit, so my purchases tend to be consumables for my working kit (heaps of snare heads!), and new cymbals/stands for spares or use on my practice kit, rather than speciality things. The most "specialty" things I've had bought for me were a LP cowbell and and a mounted tambourine. They are ideal xmas gifts, because they were are a bit cheaper than cymbals etc.

I ordered a new MRX snare last week, but the distrbutor only had one double lug model available in Australia, so I have to wait 4 months for a bridge lug model on special order.

But as I said, if octobans twirl your beanie, go get em'! You're really lucky to have parents supporting your drumming to that extent.

Thanks man. My parents are pretty supportive of my craft, and they realize that im serious when I say "this is what I want to do with my life." They've already found out that theres no use in denying me gifts just because its "drum stuff" like some parents do. I dont get it-whats the difference between a 300 dollar X item and a 300 dollar drum item? Some parents think that its so different and will not buy their kids what they REALLY want.

Oh, and I too have a cowbell, but I got that for free. Im starting to gig a lot, and I doubt that ill bring my octobans to any gig, and even if I do, they will be few and far between. I love the sound that octobans give.

Ive never really been able to try out any octobans, and I needed some sound samples. I think im going with a low pitched acrylic set.
