I'm rather excited to see how this pans out. I love my Platinum very much so, and I'm more than happy with the sound of it, so I'm pretty excited to see what DW has in stock for this new line. Hopefully it won't be as limited as the Eco-X line though.
Im not sure on the first kit, they were a few years old back in 03/04, the tobacco fade one was newer but was impossible to get a decent sound out of. Glad you like yours, but ill always be a Pearl man.

That, to me, is DWs biggest downfall: price. And subsequently because of that, their customers. Every DW owner I know swears there is no better kit. I've even had one explain why his Collector's was superior to my university's Forum. Go figure. But, if I overpaid that much for anything, I'd have to justify it to myself as much as possible, also.

Hopefully this will put DW back in the realm of us mere mortals.
I never have felt like I overpaid for my dw's.

Not that i'm a pacific fan, but I think heads could be a big factor. I remember my high school had a few pearl kits (some older vintage ones, and one newer maple one (i think it was the session series)) and none of them ever sounded great (not even 'good'). I ended up finding an old school slingerland, put some good heads, and it beat all of them soundwise. In reflection, I miss that slingerland It could be in reality the head selection (which I picked) and good tuning to make the slingerland sound much better, but it's the same bias you have.

In this country, Sweden, DW cost less than the competitors.
Yamaha, Pearl, Sonor are all more expensive.

Sounds like people like their kits. Maybe they're worth it? I'm not saying they're better than anything else, but if people pay for them and are happy with them, what is the downfall?

I was also at the DW Woodology tour. Here's the info, straight from John Good:

The DW Performer Series (I think that's the right name) should be available September 2010.

Low mass lugs (slightly smaller than the regular turret lugs). We handled these---they were very similar in quality, and not too much smaller.

The pictures we saw were standard 5-pieces, not sure how many configurations will be available. If I had to guess, maybe 7 finishes. They all looked pretty nice and standard (ebony, white, blue, red, etc.).

Black logo bass heads. Slightly different logo on the heads. The regular dw logo is filled in, all white. The DW Performer logo's is the same DW logo but outlined in white and the hollow is filled in black. Looks pretty nice, just a little different.

Performers will be manufactured in Mexico (Ensanada). Good said that they go through 420,000 sq. ft. of wood a month, and half is currently being shipped to the Mexico facility. Sounds like they're ready for a big roll-out.

No word on price, but Good and John JR Robinson both stressed that the price will be shocking. Good seems to appreciate that regular DWs are shockingly expensive, so we'll see where these shake out. Very promising

In other news, DW seems to be switching its focus to more mainstream retail possibilities. More than just the drums, they're offering more aftermarket products. The mag throw off is going to be offered after-market (which is a pretty great throw off and butt plate). They'll also be selling brass counter hoops as an upgrade (these are going to be expensive---Good promises magical quality, but I have my doubts).

Interesting company, seeming to follow the Fender model: Squier, made in Mexico, made in USA. We'll see what the future holds.

Cool. Thanks for filling in some of the details I missed. My memory is getting worse as I get older.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I've heard the price is supposed to be around $1700 for the shell pack.

I like the DW lugs..they're a breath of fresh air compared to the boring teardrop lugs most companies use (no offense to owners of any kits with teardrop lugs)

Agreed. The Camco lug is now a classic, and it really sets DW apart, just like those sexy Reference lugs.

I'm really excited to see this new DW kit, and I'm glad that the "working pro" range of drums has really filled out in the past 5 years. Those 90's Artstar ES kits I always drooled on seem so janky now compared to setups like Starclassic Performer and Renown.
