If you have a steel snare, go listen to St. Anger by Metallica. You'll get the idea.

I prefer it over coated, actually. I don't know why more people don't do it.

Well obviously it completely depends on the clear head you have on it.

I think it might be as much about tradition as it is about sound. I've gotten great souund on a snare with a clear head, and with clear "dot" heads or clear pinstripes.

Personally, I quite like my snare to be dry ish and warm, so a clear head isn't so suited to that. Also I do a fair bit of work with brushes and obviously you need the coating for that. The only time I'd be tempted to try it would be on a piccolo snare or something, because I can imagine it being an interesting sound! So all in all I've always needed the coating to be there, but if someone preferred the sound with a clear head then that's cool too, you should never compromise your sound based on tradition if you ask me.

My new snare came with a clear premier head and it sounds really good. I don't know what the difference is really between a clear and coated head on a snare but it feels responsive. The head it came with, the plus have seperated, which is irritating because I wouldve liked to experiment and try it out.

I believe the drummer in this video is using a clear head on his snare, right?

Oh, I did forget about brush work. But anyways, I do like a nice warm sound out of my snare, but I tune it kind of low.

ive got a clear remo ambassador on a pearl sensitone elite steel.....sounds very bright and loud.....you can still play brushes, but you won't get the same effect as with a coated head....
