Hey there,
It's been a while since I was here. I had so much work in the last months, and there was a great advantage during these times. I tried every kits that was possible, from Ayotte to Zickos and back. Because I need different woods for different purposes, I wrote an email to all my friends (cartage companies, drums stores, etc.) at the companies here in Hungary, and most of them were very helpful - they just gave me the equipment I was curious about, and I had a chance to play so many kits. Something came out from this challenge very quickly - let me mention Mr. Morgan Rose of Sevedust: "...I'm a birch guy at heart..."
So, I played (circa) a dozen of very good birch kits (and a dozen of maple, and some ash, and...), and I made my decision about a Starclassic Performer set to have a birch kit. These aren't as sophisticated-sounding birch drums, as were my Recording and Birch Custom Absolute kits, but I play pop/rock music mainly, so I don't really need THAT very sound of the Yamahas. And I was such a Yamawhore in the last decade, that I didin't saw many-many brilliant drums, which other manufacturers are producing...
Because these Performer drums are not in production since 2006, I was searching for a kit in good condition, and I was lucky. I found this beauty (in Walnut colour) for a very moderate price (there is one issue: the memory locks for the tom holders are missing, but this is a minor problem, and I can buy those in a week or two), and although it was VERY dirty, there are shells (and hardware) in perfect condition under the dirt. It's very hard to catch the actual colour on the pics, because there is a walnut brown stain, but there comes another amber shine from under the brown when they are under normal lights - and somehow these two colours make the shells look a kind of cranberry or so. I tried my best, but this was the best possible result with my camera.
After I cleaned the shells, you can see the result. And imagine the sound
And I'm still in search for a maple kit...
