Default survey: resonant head tuning; do you like it higher, lower, or same as batter?

    Hi All,

I just bought my first "real" set of drums (with actual resonant heads!), and have been struggling a bit with tuning. One of the issues that I've had some difficulty finding information on is what the differences between having your resonant head tuned (1) higher/tigher, (2) lower/looser, and (3) the same as your batter head.

So, vote for the way you tune your drums (so we can see what the consensus is), and why you tune the way you do. If you can articulate what the differences in sound would be between the three different tuning patterns, that would be helpful as well.

    Thanks,
    S

    Higher.

My drums have a very controlled sound to them. Not muffled, there is plenty of resonance, but it's very controlled.

My batters and resonant are at the same pitch on my toms. My bass batter is tighter than the resonant, and depending the snare I'll use tight snare side/medium batter or medium snare side/tight batter.

the same pitch on the toms, sometimes i do my bass the same pitch, and higher(batter)/lower(resonant) and vice versa on the snare depending on the song. trust me you dont want two sounds coming out of each tom because you tuned them differently, it sounds awful to me, but you might like it.

i like my reso's tuned lower than my batter.
it gives my drums more of a low punchy tone.
    which i like.

Definately slightly (emphasis on slightly) higher resonant.
