I saw a thread a while back and it said that you can't just out and out buy a MW head for your bd because it's something not to be falsely advertised. I was wondering if you can tell what kind of kit something is by the bd reso head.

Well, with the Pearl MasterWorks heads (which are white, at least in the U.S.), there is a MasterWorks logo on the bottom of it. On the heads I've seen on Master's series kits (all the one's I've seen are black) there is the word "Masters" on the bottom of the head in white.
Not sure if I've answered your question the way you wanted, but I thought I'd give it a stab.

The reason for that is simple..We have alot of pride in that logo..We don't want to catch it on some knock off -no name kits..
If you have a kit, you simply furnish your serial number of your kick drum with the order..If you indeed own the kit, its really no big deal to include it. It's the proof you own a MW kit.
I have yet to hear a MW owner complain about this.
In fact..they love the idea..;)

so if/when I want a new bass drum head I will have to go through the Pearl company or can I go through a dealer?

You'll go through your dealer. Carl can give you the part number to order. Just give your dealer the part number and your kick drum's serial number and you should be good to go.
