Its part of our "Collector Edition" series..They're very cool. Rosewood is'nt one of the choices when you build your kit..It's on these snare drums only for the time being..It's a 6 ply, 5.4 mm shell so it's very sensitive and responsive..Its a higher sounding drum then its conterparts, but has suprisingly rich tones as you stand further away from it..

I'm definitely not carl, but,
Masterworks and Master's restrospec are two different things. Masterworks is a completely custom, down to each set of plies, line of drums, while the "Master's Retrospec" kits are six ply maple kits covered in one of three different wraps. The master's kits are significantly cheaper, but price is still something the people who work at pearl can't give you. They can only give you "list" price, which is a quite a bit higher than most dealers prices.

I'm a #114 Liquid Amber junkie and although it wasn't shown on this thread the MW kit that was at NAMM (I didn't go, I only saw photos) was for me the ultimate. #114 over Tamo Ash.

How do you play that snare?!?!?!
That's like 45 degrees!
Ron "The Sledge"
07-11-2003, 04:46 PM
Yep, arthritis is what makes me have such a severe tilt on the snare. If I play it flat like I used to it brings on inflamation so it is ergonomic for me to have that angle. Feels quite natural actually. :p
Also, thanks Suthiti. :D Even though I only bought them last year the kit is very special to me because I wanted that series and color for so long.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a nice kit. ;)
It is my mission to keep it looking great.
Roli Garcia Jr. has an MLX kit in #114 Liquid Amber listed on eBay for the 3rd time (I think). It has a 20" kick, 12x8 mounted tom, and a 14x14 Floor tom tom with a matching snare. It would be great to add those toms to my set up and to also have the option of using a 20" kick in certain situations. Unfortunately, they're not in my budget right now and I have some other upgrades planned for my kit in the meantime.
As far as the arthritic condition goes I was diagnosed when I was 17. I turned 49 in March so I'm dealing with it. Watching my diet and an occasional Naproxin Sodium (Alleve) tab helps keep the condition in check. Playing actually helps to keep me limber. What, am I gonna let a little arthritis keep me from playing? No way!

You're pardoned but for what I don't know. There's also no need to be sorry as no offense was taken.
Dude, if you were to sit in on my kit we could tilt the snare to your liking and I guarantee you would have a blast! :D

Carl, I realize you're not the actual person to whom I should be addressing concerning my complaint. So, who is the appropriate individual to complain to about my hardware, the snare strainer on this new drum? I would like to get some results as I have had the dealer request a replacement, and nothing has been done for four weeks now. I also wrote to Customer Service two weeks ago and no response.
This is truly disgusting to me. And it shows how little regard for customer after the sale Pearl really cares about. To put it mildly, I'm going to let every customer at the store I teach for about his situation and to be real careful about their decision to buy Pearl.
And, what really ****** me off even more is how the company used to be. I know as I once worked for Pearl in Nashville, TN back in '76, '77 for quite awhile. I was also a clinician for a short time too. I built two fiberglass shell snare's for Louie Bellson. I've been a long time customer. This new crop of people you have in your ranks suck!
Hey John,
When I had a problem with my bass hoop, I contacted Dave Lena. He was very helpful and attentive to my problem, and I had a very positive experience. The general buzz on Pearls customer service is pretty positive.
A new strainer seems like an easy fix, so try dave and hang in there.
Good luck-

I already have my Masterworks Kit and it is FN awesome. Here is a little advise. Save your money from your paper route, sell your body, pimp your grandma and pack peoples groceries at the local supermarket for tips. In the end you will own the greatest drums ever made by human hands. They look amazing, sound amazing and feel incredible. I have to pinch myself at every gig and recording session to see if I'm awake.

Hi Carl.
Actually, I did correspond with Dave Lena and Nathan Hook both as it turns out. They took care of the problematic snare drum strainer. However, I do want to mention here that the snare strainer issue (snares vibrating loose after a few seconds or more) is most definitely a known problem. This was confirmed by long time Pearl Dealer, Fred Pierce/ Englehart in St. Louis, MO at the Studio Drum Shop. Fred, himself, owns more than one Pearl snare that also have strainers that loosen up.
When I worked for Pearl, in Nashville, in 1975, shortly after Ron Reed moved to the location from Beaverton, OR, I worked on many snare drums, and even built two fiber glass shells for Louie Bellson when he came on board with Pearl. And, strainer's loosening was never an issue such as what I've experienced with my new Master Studio series Birch shell snare. I really like the sound of the drum a lot. But, the strainer leaves something to be desired, for sure.
God Bless,
IgiDrum

Hi Carl.
00** Iam from Slovakia. RIght now Iam living in Detroit. Could you let me know who to contact about job working for Pearl. Or I would like to start mi own drum store who do I need to talk too. I would love to work for Pearl when I go back to Europe.
Thank you.
styxjdm,
What strainer model did you have trouble with? I'm not too happy with the strainer loosening on my Masterworks snare.
styxjdm
11-12-2004, 04:48 PM
The snare drum in question is the Master Studio series Birch shell in Piano Black. I was told to replace it with the SR 017 strainer that comes on the Sensitone drums. I'm still waiting for the strainer to come in. The strainer that is a source of annoyance is commonly known for this. Why Pearl doesn't dump it and come up with a better one is beyond me.

Do you folks have any info on Masterworks kits in a single headed configuration. I can't find any literature on them, yet I own an 8 pc. consecutively numbered kit. If I'm talking to the wrong guy, forgive me. Pearl hasn't answered my emails and I'm out on Pearl's Forum looking for information. I love the kit, have played it for over two years, but I'm going to be putting them up for sale shortly (osteoarthritis has taken it's toll over all my years behind different kits). I'd like to get an idea of pricing (8-10-12-13-14-15-16, & 20x20), all in maple, 8-14 are racked, 15-16 are double mounted on Pearl double-braced stand.
Thanks in advance for anything you may know about this particular model.

What good would a 100% Custom Drum Kit would be without a 100% custom finish? Nothing, thats what. Your "custom" finish will cost the same amount as any other Masterworks. Artisan woods cost more and graphics cost about 15% more than artisan wooded kits.
