That seventies BB is gonna go for a fortune, partly cos its engraved and especially cos it sounds so freakin amazing on Heavy Metal Machine. Have you notcied they haven't listed the Yamaha Brass on the big Ebay list, but its on the separate gallery of the snares? I hope they still sell that one, I think he used it to record I Am One and most of Gish.

i would kill to have the GISH snare. might have to get that divorce...lol
that is one of my fav albums. his playing and that snare sound helped mold my overall style i use today.
Wow, that's awesome!! If I could bid on any of those snares I would! But there's no way I can afford such things, I'd seriously like that Yamaha brass one he used on the Mellon Collie tour!!
Waaaaaaa!!!! No fair!!

DRATS!! Everyone is finding out about it haha. Even though I want several of his snares i.e. the brass yamaha used on the Mellon Collie, I think there are bigger jimmy fans that are going to out bid me. I'll just save up and get his signature snare. In all honesty I thought his best snare sound came from the complex record.

Man if only I wasn't so poor. Holy crap, I think the brass is out there now though. I'd love to have that DW Wildwood too. Oh well. I agree with drummingpuma, his snare sound on the Jimmy Chamberlain Complex album was awesome.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't get too caught up in what the sound was like on the recording, for a couple of reasons. For one, it is a recording after all and the sound coming off of the drum may have been considerably different than what came out of the final mix. For two, you aren't Jimmy Chamberlain. He plays the thing a certain way that brings out a certain sound, not to mention that they probably won't ever be tuned the same way as they were on the recordings ever again.
Now, if you wanted to buy it as a keepsake, because it belonged to Jimmy, that would be just great, but if I was looking for a snare with a great sound, I would go to Guitar Center and hit a bunch of snares to find what I liked in person rather than depending on what a drum sounded like on a recording.
But that's just me.

i believed he used a PEARL :) free floating steel snare. he said it's one of his favorite snares ever. this was a long time ago though. the snare has been discontinued.

Hey, I just call it like I see it. While the quality and sound of his snares is undoubtedly going to be good, they are going to be overpriced for what you are going to get out of them - but that's just my opinion.

I did my research and the snare used on Gish actually belongs to Butch Vig. I had a hunch that hte Yamaha being sold was one but I think it is actually Butch's snare. He always quote's it as being one of his favs and in one interview about recording Nevermind he said " We used my Yamaha brass on some songs which is the snare we used on Gish". I would have gone for the 400 if I'd had known sooner. I reckon the snare might be the same model though, cos its early nineties, but its not the actual snare used for Gish.

While its true that you shouldn't buy these snare drums based on the sound you hear on the recording, there are a few points that should be considered. If you are the type who is chasing those sounds, these snares would be great places to start (thats how he got them, anybody should be able to do the same). The other point is that they are all tried and true snare drums. There are really no gambles, unless you consider buying a great snare drum with a great sound that you didn't want a gamble (and it is), but if that's not what you're worried about, or you already like the snares, go for them. He didn't exactly have very many worthless snare drums, from the looks of it, he has A-class snare drums, both classic and modern.
That being said, I would enjoy quite a few of these snare drums.
