Ok Pearl Reps,
Pearl makes sturdy hardware, but I have one question. Any plans for a throne with a backrest by Pearl?

I have a feeling you're going to see some nice additions to the throne line by this winter. . .but thats a while away. If you're really looking for an awesome throne, i recommend checking out thrones made by companies who specialize in that kind of thing. I almost never go against pearl, and i really like pearl's thrones, but i'm also a drummer giving advice to another drummer so no offense pearl. i use a grey rock-n-soc motion throne with a back. And honestly, i don't think any company can compete with this throne. I don't know if you've seen them or sat in one, but they have a 5 leg base, and the seat itself gives a little in every direction. I do a ton of moving around when i drum, and this thing decreases fatigue a bunch, and is so comfortable. If you're looking for a throne, i would check out rocknsoc thrones. I love them. If you were just inquiring to see if pearl was making a throne with a back, and not wanting to buy one, stay tuned, i'm almost sure they will have something polished and refined at the winter Namm. If i could out guess everyone else here, i would predict a D-2000. (or something along the lines of an eliminator throne.) but then again, who knows! i just hear some stuff from other drummers, but stay tuned and we'll see what comes up.

John, is the seat you describe the one that sits on springs? I tried on once & I just could not handle the way it moves around. I like to sit on something very firm.

Yeah, it tilts slightly forward and backwards. Its pretty unique, and its kinda funny. . .i didn't like it at first either, but i was forced to use one because the drummer who's kit i was supposed to use had no other throne. I am still pretty young and i'm not to that age yet where i'm having back problems, but a bad throne at any age can make your back hurt if its just a little off, and no matter how this throne is setup, it reduces a ton of fatigue. But i do agree, its probably not for everyone. Its pretty wild at first.

I meant to reply on this a while ago. The reason I was asking was that I may (maybe in a year or so), be looking for a throne with a backrest. I've seen the ones from rocnsock and pork pie, but I think my preference would either be the gibraltor, (not the rocknsoc), which has the motorcycle style bottom and sells at a street price of around $130.00 (model 9508mb) or the newer Tama Ergorider with backrest which seems to have a street price of around 159.00. I currently have the motorcycle seat one(model 7508m) from Gibraltar and like it very much. I just would prefer a backrest eventually. I've tried the rocnsocks at the stores and just don't care for them. I also want to make sure whatever I get is fairly easy to carry, etc, which would rule out the rocnsoc with the 5 legs.
My thought was to give Pearl a try if one would come out in the next year or so. Hey Pearl Reps, any plans?

I'm sure if they haven't thought of it already. . .which i'm sure they have. . .they'll think about it soon.
Some food for thought...
I have the Tama ergorider with the backrest. I purchased it only because Pearl didn't have a comparable model. All my other thrones are Pearl, and I can say that the Tama throne is just too hard. You actually seem to perch on top the foam, and it's very uncomfortable in comparison. The backrest part is great, but the tripod legs that came with mine are very, very unstable (they now ship it with 4 legs). The bases between Pearl and Tama interchange, so I was able to put one of my wider Pearl bases with the Tama top to make it a bit more stable. It works well, but I do have to be careful that 1 leg is directly behind me at all times. If I would've known how top heavy it would be, I never would've bought it.

Thanks for the feedback on the Tama throne. So fa the best choice for me seems to be the Gibraltar. It would be similar to the one I have now, but more comfortable, since it's not all final, plus it would have double braced vs the eliptical legged Gibraltar I have now. My current throne is excellent, don't get me wrong, it's just I think my posture and back would do better with a backrest.
Yes, your back will feel much better, especially if you rehearse or practice for extended amounts of time. :) With me, the longer I sit, the more I tend to slouch.
I too should've gone with the gibralter, only I felt that the small size of Tama's backrest would get in the way of my elbows less. Sitting at the gibralter may me feel like I had to be careful how I swung my arms. Try it out first if you can. It may not be an issue for you.

I tried the Rocn Soc throne with backrest again today. It was comfortable, (and bigger than the Gibraltar) but I still think the Gibraltar might be better for me. (Also, so nobody gets confused: Gibraltar has a throne with backrest 9508MB, but they also have rocnsoc seat tops sold thru Kaman Music (distributor for Gibraltar) that are different. I think my preference is the actual Gibraltar brand seat top, (9508MB).
On another note, the Gibraltar 9508mb is cheaper than both the Tama and the RocnSoc. I have other Gibraltar hardware, and have never been disappointed. I'll put in on my Christmas list-perhaps my wife can get me one.

I used to have very bad posture (as does the rest of the population:P) Anyways, a few years ago I went to a chiropractor and discussed my posture while playing. I had my throne set up & was air drumming away as the Doctor studied my movements & body postioning.
What an incredible expierience! At first I felt all twisted & gimped... BUT THAT WAS PROPER POSTURE!!! HA!HA!HA! So wether a throne has a backrest or not doesn't matter! It comes down to discipline of proper posture. Off the top of my head check out how player's like Kenny Aronoff, Zoro (like or hate them) they have very excellent playing posture... and yes it does help!
I want to play my drums forever so whaterver I can do to strengthen & improve my body to take the punishment, I'll do it!!!

I find the pearl thrones to be to firm. I'm sure the stand is up to their high hardware standard, but a softer seat would be nice. Maybe I just got a bony arse. Roc n soc is sooo comfortable, haven't tried the motion throne though. The gas shock one would be good, but a previous one I had was destroyed by a 26 stone singer, the throne was almost irretrievable

It would be great if Pearl made a throne with a backrest but here is my top 3 thrones:
1-Drum Frame
2-Roc'N'Soc (w/ backrest)
3-Pearl D-150 & D-250

I just want to say, that I went to Guitar Center and I tried a seat with backreast and I could not only reast back but it also helped me to maintain a straight back posture which is good, beacause I think that having a curved back posture for a long time is bad for your back.

I have a rocnsoc nitro and find it extreemly comfortable. However, I wound up removing the backrest. In my case it was actually a detriment to my posture. I would tend to slouch back against it instead of sitting straigh up. So, if you have the chance you should consider a chair that doesn't have a fixed backrest just in case. (I have no experience with the tama or girbraltar so I do not know if the backrest comes off)

Tama makes a back rest that can be sold separately or come with the throne. I personally like it, it gives alot of support to the whole back. Helps u to have good posture when ur playin and not slouch.:D :)
