Drum Sizing

Now this may be a dumb question, but here goes:

I have been comparing OCDP and Masterworks kits. Now I am slightly confused on one thing. When the shell sizes are shown, are they shown as Diameter X Depth (ex: 24 x 18) or vis versa? I have seen both ways on the Pearl site.

Now I did not do a search on this, maybe I should have, but I didn't. So don't raz me about that please.:eek:

Usually its Depth X Diameter. I may be incorrect, but I don't think you usually see cases where the depth is greater than the diameter (except for Octobans or "Quarter-Toms") Now if you're ordering something custom made, you will want to double check to be certain that the dimensions you think you want are the actual dimension you're going to get.

Wow, it sure would suck to reverse the depth and diameter specs and not find out about it till after your drums were already made.

Jonathan is correct. Depth x Diameter, it always confuses me too ;).

In some cases (e.g. the 2002 Pearl Price Guide), the sizes are shown as Diameter x Depth (which is backwards from what is the commonly-accepted practice, adding to the confusion).

It makes more sense to me too (since the diameter is more important than the depth), but the most common way to describe the dimensions is Depth x Diameter. Usually, it's pretty clear what you mean though (either way). If you say you have a 14x5" snare drum, most people assume you don't have a 5" diameter snare drum. :-)
