Has anyone compared the three sizes of reference snare drums yet? If so, could you please post your impressions?
Thanks

Hi SnareKick,
Could you please tell me why you like 13" snares? I'm considering it this time.
BTW: Like you, I'm a guitarist too.

13" snares are ineresting. they are damn good for a wide range of playing, like the super high and the moderatly low, but you won't get a HEAVY back beat from it

I always get two 14 snares only because I use them for a 'weird' reason to most people. Ones my main on snare, ones always on snare-off or tom. It gives me a cool range mixture...Off topic, sorry.

Pearl has finally got me into their snares...it was only a matter of time. I'm deffinitly interested in the 6.5x13 snare. I bet I could tune that thing so fat and it would sound so huge and fat with a big fat crack. !!!! how much does the 6.5x13 go for anywas? anyone try it? how was it?

Do you have any official reason for it beeing 6 luged only?
Is it because Pearl doesn't have any 8-luged 13" DieCast Hoops?

One thing i was a bit surprised at off the vids and audio(not in person0 is that for a 20ply shell - it seems to be extremely high end in sound - anyone whos heard it in the flesh care to explain whether this is just bad recording, or if it is actually that high end of a drum!
I thought the same thing. but I orderd it anyway thinking it was my crapy speakers.

No different to ordering a cymbal you aint heard -in the flesh. ;)
I'd prefer the 13 over a 14.....but i am odd that way. :D
not really I paid 500us if I dont like it I'll it take out on my next tour in Norway and sell it for a 1000us. but I have a feeling I'll want to keep it

No way in hell is it the same!
A cymbal will sound similar to the recording, or similar to the other sizes you've heard - but these snares are totally new and unique and based on those recordings - which IMO arent all that great - you cant judge it at all.
Only once have i ever just goe out on a limb with a cymbal - and luckily it paid off - but with a snare, which cots considerably more, and you'll be waiting for for 8 months - i just couldnt do it! What if you heard it 6 months in and hated it - you'd be gutted!

I'd be willing to bet my left conjone that you would LOVE the reference snare and if you didn't, you could sell it just as wood described below.
I guarantee it!

I only can say that my 14X5 snare sounds like Spags snare on the last Mudvayne's album... very close to it...
I also discovered that it got a pretty wide range of tune, not only in pich, but also in a sound quality.

Sounds similar you say? So thats not the sound of the item itself then, is it? :)
No Millsy it IS the same. You dont get a true representation of a recorded cymbal - how can you? You dont even receive the one you are listening too, either! Even Paiste arent that consistant - as consistant as they are.
Think about it. Amplifiers and speaker ALL sound different, even with the same make and model -one reason being, because of component tolerances which ARE different. Even speaker cable affects the frequencies you hear. The ONLY true representation is, the one directly in front of you.
Heres a test for you. Have your music set at its lowest possible volume......and then at its highest volume. Does the cymbal sound the same sound the same too you? Does it sound like a REAL cymbal thats directly in front of you? I doubt it. :)
btw, If you dont like it....you sell it. As on ebay, theres always someone waiting in the wings for a bargain. ;)
.....aaaaaaaaaaaaand back to the topic itself. :)

Suppose your right in a sense, though i'll never admit it now will i! haha!
And dont try and confuse me by comparing a cymbal to a drum, thats like comparing a beautiful woman to a hillbilly named Earl!

I played them all in "The Lineup" at NAMM. Sorry for sounding like a Pearl Manufacturers rep but they ALL did exactly what they were supposed to do. Each size was very sensitive and had the type of punch & crack you would hope for from it's relative size.
Pearl has really done the job with these snares.
Kudos guys!
Gary
hey gary I ordered the 14x6.5 .I play a lot of R&B and jazz gig's un miked and was hopeing that a big snare whould help me project.I don't know if you do any brush work but do you think Im on the money with thinking this would be a good brush snare?

Though I usually prefer 6.5 deep snares, I ordered the 14X5 Reference snare to match my kit. I figured with all those plies the drum must weigh a ton and I didn't want to have to rig my snare stand up with guy wires. Also, drums with that many plies should be insanely loud. The 6.5 must sound like a howitzer and I didn't want to incur the wrath of my bandmates (though the thought did cross my mind).

RE: R&B and jazz gig's un miked and was hopeing that a big snare whould help me project.
Yeah... I do believe it will project... right through the walls of a nuclear reactor! However... that's not to say it will be too loud if you play it gently. The 6.5 was plenty sensitive to react to brushes but in my little world I would probably flip to the 5"... as a matter of fact I did! I still miss the idea and depth of the 6.5 but I've found the 5 to give me everything I need (so far). My main venue calls for ALL types of music from light jazz to funk to rock to latin etc... I'm so please with this kit!
Have a great day!
g
slybond, I paid 500$ for my 14x6.5 Mass Music
