it says Masters series at the bottom because it's a stock coated Powerstroke 3 head that can be purchased from Pearl. I guess they haven't had any special "Reference Series" heads produced yet. I know there are heads that have the Masterworks logo at the bottom, not sure about Reference series yet. It's not an insult to have Masters at the bottom, even though it's a higher end kit.

Hook, YUK at those sizes.

Man, all teeney weeney drums except the kick. There has been many a kit I have passed up due to them having stubby 14x11 and 16x13 toms.
Heck I even own a 14x12 and 16x14 I would much rather have in squared sizes with legs. Guess its just Sumn I never liked in low toms ever since my 14x12 Export, Hangin that bomb off a stand. Like ZZ Top says ,,,,,,,, "she got legssssssssss, she know how to Use them"

Completely agree. What's wrong with floor toms actually being FLOOR toms.

I personally prefer floor toms being floor toms too (*though MY drum kit doesn't reflect that)

This is just a few set ups, Memphis drum shop has floor toms on their Reference kit.

Thanks Hook

It is nice to hear a response from you. I got lucky as far as getting legs for my 14x12 and 16x14 because the guy I bought it from included 2 dynamounts and legs for the toms.

Yup, I never was comfortable thinking my big toms might tip a stand over accidentally and ruin my precious drums.
*****One Sidenote and further question if I may ask of you, Hook?
I once read that many top artists do not use an 18 inch tom because they say the frequency or something is not recorded well (muddy, not very audible etc.)
Do you have info regarding this? I own an 18x16 and just play it same as any other tom in my kits. I also know a fella with an 18x18 who likes his alot.
Hook or anyone, please post any well known or little known facts a curious mind might love to hear about 18 inchers. Thanks

i've kinda heard the same thing about 18"'ers, either that they dont record well or that they get in the way of the "bass" too much...whether that means bass guitar or bass drum im not really sure, but i hve a 18.16 and i like it (but i wish rockstar customs came in 18x18 cuz then i'd hve one of those instead), but ive never tried too much recording with it, so i'd like to hear what people have to say too.

Hook, i just noticed that the double pedal only has one beater on it but both eq patches. any reason for this.

also, do you know if they still have that sexy MW in tobacco fade over tamo?

I want one of those coated heads for my Masters kit. I didnt know they made them with the masters logo on the bottom. That makes me very excited!

Cool...

What would be great is if they could/will have a second, non-Reference kit set up as well, with the same basic sizes, head choices, tunings, etc., just to illustrate what kind of difference the shells make.

Oh, I'm sure they do. I was just thinking it would be an enlightening thing to have included as part of the clinic itself - "Here is the audible difference that these new shells offer, compared to other top-of-the-line Pearl drums."

I went there last Saturday, and got to test the baby out.

I can't say im crazy about the color, as the lighting of the room I was in made it look like some wierd peach color. The Red Viking and Masterworks both looked much nicer (Tabacco fade over tamo) They had another tom that wasn't set up on a shelf next to it. And like he said, the pedal only had one beater on it. I also didn't like the way it was tuned without muffling, but I must say, it did sound a lot better compared to the other sets in the room.

I'm definitely getting this drumset, im saving up right now, is it really that glossy in person? and the fade doesnt look quite as extreme as it does in all the other pictures

Well, they didnt have the 6 piece setup. They had to clear out the big room for paiste day. instead they had a 4 piece with a free floater snare in purple craze. they were still the sweetest drums i have ever played and they had both beaters on the double pedal. good work Pearl.

You can get a free floater in reference finishes?

They got a new reference, Granite Sparkle. Didn't see the Rootbeer fade their, but it was a short visit. I'm not crazy about the color, then again I don't like any of the Reference colors.
