All this talk about masterworks kits and suprisingly no one has mentioned Todd! Im a huge Styx fan, and even more so a Todd fan. This guy plays like no one else ive ever heard. I live in Pensacola Fl. And they were here the 22nd, the opening night of their new Cyclorama tour (CD to be released the 18th of Feb.) And I gotta hand it too them...for some older guys they rocked!! Have only gotten better in my opinion. Anyways...if you guys want to see a killer set check out his Masterworks set at toddsuchermann.com, then go to todds gear. All I can say is, wouldnt it be nice. I dont know if anyone has noticed this or not, but he gets a very unique sound out of his Toms...im trying to figure out what heads hes using, it looks like Remo Clear Emperors, but im not sure. The interesting peart is, I think he started off as a Sonor guy, and his set sounded very close to his Pearl one, then he switched to Ayotte, and again similarities in sound were very identical, and now hes using Pearls...and again his sound is just that...his own unique sound. Ive come close to buying a Masterworks set just to see if I could get the same sound. Anyways, all in all, if you want to hear an insane drummer...id suggest getting any Styx Cd from Return to Paradise up to StyxWorld live 2001. And for the ultimate in what sounded like the best recording ive heard in a while/even more intense Todd playing....buy Cyclorama...even if you buy it just for the inspiration of listenin to that guy play. And for anyone who digs the double bass stuff, I heard some bits and pieces off the Cd, and it sounds like he gets going with that....Anyways...cool site Toddsucherman.com...and of course Pearldrum.com!

I have the Paradise revisited DVD and Todd smokes on those Styx songs.
Styx actually has a killer lineup right now.
Looking forward to some new music.

I didnt know there was a DVD to the Return to paradise thingy, I just have the CD. I'll have to get that. Well tomorrow its Big hair time with White Snake, Scorpions, and Dokken...aint no Styxs by any means but hey, I got free tickets! Thats cool Stavis your B-days on the 18th...I think it was meant to be! You and the new Styx Cd that is. I'll be rushin to the store for mine...theres more than 5 years worth of drum lessons on there if I can even remotely try to keep up with Todd. By the way has anyone checked out the new Masters colors? Im likin the Black Diamond fade thing, thats pretty sweet...Pearl...what more can be said.

Out of curious speculation....You wouldnt be Todd Suchermann himself by any chance? Just giving your locale and nothing else...all mysterious like? If you're not thats cool but a big let down...if you are and you dont want anyone to know I understand...but that still sucks...because I just wanna know 1 thing about your playing.

Todd is an outstanding drummer and
should definitely be checked out if he
comes to your town. He not only puts
a great new spin on the earlier Styx
songs but plays the "right thing" for
their most recent cuts.
Visit his website to find out more about
him and his 2 CD Drum Library.
Thanks,

I dadgum will! White snake Dokken and Scorpions played alright tonight. Scorpions drummer first off, wasnt using a pearl set....and two his drum solo was pretty weak. But hey...It was a free show for me so I wont complain. Looking forward to getting that 2 CD set thing when it comes out (if it isnt already). I still have yet to hear anyone recently that in my opinion, is as good as Todd. I wonder if hes giving lessons :-)
cool drums ...but I really can't stand it when people mix the different color choices of hardware. That kit would be so much cooler if it was all gold. Just my opinion.

What colors did he mix, I think he got all gold hardware on what he could get it on...I dont think they make the racks in gold or the things the toms attach to. I wouldnt mind, shoot...that kit must've costed him 10,000 or more. Unless they spotted him for it. Which must be nice.

todd is a great drummer, and friend of mine....i think he is highly under-rated....i actually almost bought his back up Ayotte kit when he was switching to pearl, but it didn't work out.....he is a great guy and a great player though!

Thats pretty awesome! Maybe one day ill meet him. And I agree he is waaayyyy under-rated. But then again maybe when Styx new CD hits the shelves some people will go out and get it, to hear how good he is themselves. He lets loose! I mean come on, you got guys like Dennis Chambers playing pop music with Santana, and by the drum part you'd think it was joe shmoe or a radio shack drum machine on loop. Well anyways, hes been my inspiration for a good while now, so I dont need convincing. That Ayotte kit would have been one bad set of drums! Does anyone know what kind of heads he uses though?

of course....he uses remo clear ambassadors on toms (top and bottom) and coated ambassador on snare....and im pretty sure they are powerstrokes on the kick drums...his sound is awsome, and a lot of it has to do with Gary, Styx's sounds man.....he is amazing!

I noticed that first thing about his drums when I first heard Styx with Todd. I thought to myself " How does he get that sound out of his toms?" They sounded almost electric or triggered or something, because ive never heard a drum that sounded like that ever! And their sound guy is pretty incredible! I saw them with Kansas here in P'cola and Kansas really didnt sound that good, it sounded all washed up and nothing came through clear. But when Styx came on you could actually hear definition. Especially Todds toms...you heard the full range, the floors sounded insane! His whole set! Cant really say 1 thing without saying it all. Its too bad he doesnt have his own video or something. Hes just insanely good! And I cant wait for the Cyclorama CD. I heard the one song on Todds website and then another at their concert when they were tearing everything down. Its probably one of the best sounding recordings ive heard in a long long time! And oh yeah, thanks for the info on his drum heads! Im eager to try them out!

For any of you guys that might be interested, Todd gives a really cool break down of each song on the up coming cyclorama CD. Check it out on his homepage Toddsuchermann.com. Theres also 2 songs you can listen to off their new albem, both are killer! For anyone who wants to hear the power of a pearl masterworks set, its worth listening to just for that!

Happy day late Birthday to Stavis! And for anyone whos been looking for any masterworks sounds, Styxs new CD Cyclorama is now out! And Todd's drums are sounding good! If anything check out his playing, he really has some cool grooves, and his style is very "open". He does things in places that make me think, wow! I never thought about a groove or a fill being incorporated like that. Its almost like Neil Pearts old school style, just getting hit with that unexpected drum fill/groove and all you can do is keep playin back that one part to see if you can even think about how to figure it out! Check it out its worth it!
Hey Phiznat,
I fyou like wide open flowing players....check out peter gabriel's secret world live...it has Manu Katche on drums and his playing is sick!!! it comes out on DVD on march 11. Trust me Manu is the Sh#t
