I would recommend tama roadpro stands. 1 straight for the ride, 1 boom stand/tom stand for the tom and one crash, and 2 booms for the other crash and china. www.midwestpercussion.com seems to have them for pretty cheap.

just one tom?? both Tama and pearl offer great hardware to cover all setups from a cheap (but still excellent) level right up to the best quality hardware about. ANYTHING from those two is great.

Quality for money = Ashton or Gibralter Boom Stands.

Therefore your not limited, with Straight stands and stuff you are.

I've got the exact same setup for my gig kit. I used to use my Gibraltar rack with the cut-down setup, but recently swtiched to stands. I use three Pearl 800 stands (the ones which can be both straight and booms) and one Pearl grabber boom arm with my ride on it. Its very economical and easy to set up. Thats what I recommend you get.

Here are a couple of pictures...

racks are basically designed for kits with more gear, your kit probably doesnt need a rack because of it's size. But i think boom stands are the way to go, you can reach more places with them, and have much more options...

if you have the money to spend i would go for the advanced hardware because of the super strength, but if you want good stands at a good price go for the pearl 800 series or the tama roadpro! both are resonable price, and pro quality....... hope this helps your decision!

If thats all you have on your kit, definatly get rid of the rack. No questions asked.

In my opinion, the 800 series stands are plenty strong enough to last a life-time. They are by no means light-weight. The only benefit to the advanced hardware in my eyes is the infinite position tilters, these are very good and I use the older Uni-locks on my rack. However because the advanced hardware is heavier duty, it is not as easy to gig with due to the extra weight.

For a gig kit, the 800 series hardware is ideal.

how tall are you psylence? Kinda random but that 20" doesn't look that small when you're behind the kit. I've seen people with 20" kicks and it looks a CD.

If you want to conserve even more space, I guess you could use dw's (and I assume other companys) double stands (tom/cymbal or cymbal/cymbal)...

heck, you could even use cymbal stackers for even more room...

but what do i know...^_^''

I'm just over 6 foot. I agree a 20" kick can sometimes look small, I guess it's down to the way its set up.

I don't quite understand. Why would you want to buy a rack, but then not put all of your stuff on it?

I bought a 2-sided rack for 3 toms and 5 cymbals. In hindsight, for that size setup, there is a lot more to carry around with the rack. But you do save setup time because everything is in the right place straight away.

My kit has since grown to include 5 toms, but I'm now thinking of downsizing to a 4-piece and getting rid of the rack, its just too inconvenient to carry around.

But in the end, it's down to personal preference as to whether a rack is right for you.

A rack gives you the ability to position the bass separately from the toms where ever they work best for you with no regard to each other's position.

It's a big jump either way to buy stands when you've had a rack or vice versa. With the Gibraltar system, I've cut down several tubes to sizes I wanted and later made some pretty small light racks. I've usually found a rack to weigh about the same as having double braced stands perform the same duties. When dealing with tight stage areas, I got sick & tired of people knocking my stuff down. A rack stops that. Even with just a 12' front tom and 2 crash cymbals on it. I thought that ridiculous a year ago but my drums needed the protection.
