when people go out in their thousands to buy reference kits, will keller make similar shells? they already make separate african mahogany, birch and maple shells, and when theres alot more people buying reference kits do you think they will copy pearl?

I'd bet those smart folks at Pearl have some patents on these things.

can you really patent wood combinations? if so why didn't someone patent maple when it first was used instead of mahogany?

you don't have to copy pearl to mix woods. it was done long before the reference series.

^^^ Yes that is true, but more or less often on low end kits. This is the first High end kit that offers Only mixed woods and also haveing each drum mixed totally different. This of course is all with the acception of the 12 inch tom.

They probably will ( copy Pearl ) but not right away. They'll first see if people will go out in their thouthands, then they'll wait till things settle down so it doesn't look like a qicky rip-off, and then they'll do it. That's my theory.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. In fact it was probably Pearl who "copied" some other company. Maybe these wood combos haven't been made before, but still Pearl probably got the idea from someone else.

I'm not trying to argue but it seems to me that this is sort of a dead end issue. Everybody's got a line of maple kits, birch, etc yet no one has necesserily copied anybody. It's just a metter of what you do with the resources at hand. One way or another everything's been done, you know, mixing woods, sizes, etc, etc, etc. It's just a matter of finding an innovative way to present it and Pearl has done just that.

Premier has had the Gen-X maple/birch kits for a while.

They can do those sizes, and mixes like pearl, and if you need, you can change the shells only in your drumkits, but you can't buy "pearl" badges.
If someone want to play with those reference kits, he/she will buy reference drumkit, without questions.
I hope this was understandable

I wouldn't mind seeing keller make some mixed maple/mahogany bass drums

they will because they want to keep their product in demand.

it depends if the reference series becomes popular (like almost as popular as masters)

That poll is kind of a dead end poll. You don't have to copy Pearl to mix woods in shells, its been done long before. Pearl has made a mixed wooded kit before (not being Masterworks) it was either an old Masters series or old Sessions series, I don't remember.
And Keller, they do make or have made a Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany mix like some of the old Slingerlands if I'm not mistaken.

The Masterworks line has been around since 1998. It has been no secret that you could get wood combinations with these kits. For the most part, the reference kits are just prefabed Masterworks drums in a sense. Hardly anyone orders a Masterworks in all maple, all birch, or all mahogany. 9 out 10 kits are wood combos. I think that is where the idea of the reference came from in the first place. If Keller was going to copy, They would have done it already.

the point of the thread was: would they copy pearls combinations exsactly, not will they mix woods. will they bring out a line with the exsact configurations(sp?). if that is the case, then i'd buy a keller 'reference' kit because pearls shells are way to thick, IOM thinner shells are alot nicer to hear (keller, tama etc.)
