Hey ppl, I was just wondering if any of you have 20" bass drums, if so, how do they sound?? is there a big difference between a 20" and a 22 inch?? I am considering purchasing one for my SRX kit soon so any comments on them i would really appreciate!!!!!
thanks!

I currently have an elx with a 20" bass, and I used to have an entry level kit with a 22. now directly comparing these is totally unfair. of course the 22 sucked comparitively, but thats only because it was entry level. but, if properly tuned, I believe that 20's and 22's are quite similar in sound. personally I like 20's better because they are smaller. that makes them easier to transport, and also you can mount your rack toms lower if thats how you like it.
Other than that, I must say that my 20" bass is quite a sexy beast.

I have a 22 too but i'd agree you can get a plenty good sound out of a 20. not wimpy at all

I very much prefer 20's. I have a kit with a 22x16 and i have a kit with 2 20x20's. The 20s mount toms lower and have more of a punch whereas 22 s are more boomy. Also since they are 20x20 they have the punch and a nice deep sound. GO WITH 20'S YEA!!!

thanks for the input guys, i went into the masters dream kit thing and compared them, i have to say i think i prefer the way the 20x16 sounded! it did seem to have a more controlled punche, at least to my ears. Anyways i am going to look inot the cost of one soon
What about for a loud, punchy, slappy, boom, characteristic of metal music? Lots of these guys use 22-24, if not 26. Would I be able to, with the right amount or combonation of plies, be able to recreate that sound. The only "metal" player that uses a 20 is Spuug, and I think his bass tone is a little too sharp and not low-end enough. Of course his drums are 6 ply maple, and with an 8 ply with half mahogany, I'd be able to get a lower punch. Do you guys think this is a good idea at all?
PS- Does pearl offer 18x20 basses? Thanks a lot dudes.

OK they do! I should have looked for myself, sorry.
Do you guys have any input?
yes-
i was astounded, in teh kit maker sound clips, to find that a 20" mahogany bass sounded just as deep as a 24" maple.... i would recommend a 20x18" mahogany bass drum, smaller but still warm and deep mmmmmmmmm
