Which wood is better for the price of these kits? I play in a hard rock band. We play mainly live, not a lot of studio work. I have priced both kits and there around the same. mountings are diff. What do you's think is more bang for the buck? Birch or Maple?

I play a Starclassic Performer and the sizes are 10, 12,14, 20. The craftsmanship and quality like all things Japanese is excellent. The hardware too is solid and very intelligently designed. The tom mount design is fantstic and very conducive to a vibrant, resonant sound.
Sound is something you really have to think about. Being made of birch, if it's a controlled sound which you want with a certain volume threshold, then the performer is for you. One thing about the sound which I don't like is the lack of "boom" projected by the bass drum. It just lacks boom and mine is a 20x18. I've tried many different heads on it but there was never any appreciable difference. I read a review on the Performer in an issue of MD, and the reviewer had a similar complaint.
I've never tried an SRX but it does seem a fantastic kit of incredible value. I think you'll just have to really play both kits and decide which sound is for you. Either way you can't go wrong. I have always been a big Tama buff and wanted to also distinguish myself from the Pearl crowd. Anytime you go and see a gig in Sydney, chances are the drummer is playing Pearl. This means Pearl does make fantastic drums but so does Tama however Tama has the "less frequently seen" appeal for me at least.

Do you want birch or maple? Starclassic Perf - birch, SRX - Maple.

The way I see it is:
Performer- birch and die cast hoops.
Session- maple and super hoop II's.
They are diffrent in 2 VERY big ways (sound wise) and should be decided on by the future owner.
