View Full Version : Cleanest, crispest, most glasslike hihats (what are they)
Alright guys, now that we've got our own "cymbal insanity" board, here goes. Taking opinions on hi hats. Got tired of Rock hats (zildjian) awhile ago, been using New Beats (nice but need a change). Not looking for heavy metal double xtra heavy's, and not looking for extremely dry jazz ones either. Trying to think of pro/cons, cymbals I've not thought of. What's the crispest, cleanest, most glasslike hi hats you've ever heard.
Thanks for posting.

Anything with a "venting system". Like sound edges or mastersounds, or even quick beats.
definitely get them in a brilliant finish (if available).
I would suggest A Custom Mastersounds, A Zildjian quickbeats (get brilliant), or Signature Sound edges.
And you should probably go for 13" since you want "glassy".

A Custom Mastersounds for sure, the 12" are the crispest and cleanest set, although not really the glassiest i found, the 13's were the glassiest but not as crisp and clean. The issue with the 12" set, is they may not project as well when closed either.
13 A custom projection hats are glassy and has a well defined chick!

the mastersounds and sound edges are pretty similar in sounding but i think that the Paistes are a bit brighter and more articulate. but they'll both give you the vented sound you're looking for. I'm partial to the sound edges as I used to own a pair, but they aren't cheap either (i think they retail for almost 350 dollars).

I went to my local drum shop and tried Zildjian's 15" Sweet ride hats. They had a deeper yet higher pronounced chick than the A mastersound hats. I loved em! They had them retailed for $215. When the available cash comes up that'll be the next item I buy. I would HIGHLY suggest trying them out if you can. It sounds like the sound your looking for. Has anyone else tried them? If so, what's your opinion?

Yeah!!! HH Fusion Hats, 14" AA Flat Hats, HH Bright Hats, also the AA Triple Hi Hats with 10" Top, 14" Middle, 14" Bottom. I Have the Flat hats and the triple hats. But i think you would need the HH Fusion or Bright Hats.

I Recently bought those. They work awesome with any music, they are very crisp and clean, project very good!!. They look huge compared to the normal 14" or 13" hats!!

Sweet Hats as the crispest, cleanest, most glasslike hats? That is soo far from what they are designed to be it isn't even funny. The smaller the size the crisper they will sound, 15" hats are big! They are sloshy, and warm, they have a chick, but it is no where near as pronounced as a Mastersound. They are loose hats, designed more for that old slosh jazz Gene Krupa sound, but they took well with rock drummers who like that the sloshy open hi-hat sound, and for rock you don't really need a pronounced chick either. I wouldn't be surprised to see them replaced soon with the A Vintage and Cie hats in a 15" version.

When I went shopping for new HiHats, I had every
intentions to get a set of Mastersounds.
But when I A/B'd them with the Quickbeats I changed
my mind, the Quickbeats just sounded better to me.

Now that i think about it, the bottom hat played on top will probably give you that sound. Beauford has a sound like that with K/Z's and the Z on top, its very bright, but defined, i tried it out, you need big tips on your sticks to pull it off well, but the chick works out ok, even with the heavier cymbal on top, it made it very glassy and sharp sounding, very penetrating, but because the K is on the bottom, it wasn't overly loud when played open, and it retains some darker hiss sounds to it for those quick splashes. Definitly work the look. I will however stick to 13" as most likely being the size of choice for the type of cymbals you suggest.

I have an A Custom top paired up with a Z bottom. These sound exactly like what you described. I use these hats for louder shows and outdoor venues.
I mostly play the other two cymbals (K/A Custom Mastersound) paired up which sounds very crisp and light, but a little dryer than you mentioned you were looking for.

the sound edge hats are the best i ever heard
Alright fellow drummin brothers, I appreciate all your responses. I know, there aint anything worse than "what's the best this/that". Anyway I figure I could at least take the time to write back and tell ya what worked for me in the end. Tried some A Custom Mastersounds 14" loved the chick, and closed sounds but something about the open wash just wasn't working for me. Didn't have any real Paiste's available to check out. Hats off to Doggie once again for turning me onto the AAX Fusion hats. Gotta set of 13" regular finish and they weren't happening. Got these new brilliant finish, look out. Everything I was looking for. The brilliant seems to really bring out the glassness and utter crispness of these. Thanks again for posting. Drummers helping drummers.
