View Full Version : Mahogany plies on the 20" bass drum

In some places, such as the video with Dennis Chambers, he states that the 20" and larger bass drums have 6 plies of mahogany. In the brochure I have, it states that the 18" and 20" have 4 plies of mahogany and the 22" and 24" bass drums have 6 plies. Which is it?
Also, I have ordered the 20" x 16" and I currently have an MRX and a BRX kits with 22" x 18" bass drums. I've never had a 20" bass drum and I'm not sure what to expect. Any clues?
Finally, I have not specified a tom holder on the bass drum yet. Apparently this is installed in Tenn. Does anybody have an opinion about getting the tom holder or not? I have always had them but the trend seems to be to not have them on the bass drums these days. I am leaning towards getting it installed but I am open to arguements the other way.
Thanks,

I would say the brochures are probably right. I mean...that would be a thick *** 20" bass drum, and i bet Dennis just got confused.
20" bassdrums are extremly punchy, not terrible low, but also very focused. You get a nice thump, or a beautiful boom (depends on how you tune it). Its not going to kill anyone (like a 22" or 24"), but it has more power than your little 18"
And if you want a tom mount on your bass drum, it won't make much of an audible difference, but it looks way more High End to not have one, adn just use a rack or stands

Thanks for the response. I suspect that the brochure is correct as well but I'm hoping to get an answer from someone at Pearl. As for the size, having never had or even played an 18" bass drum, or a 20" for that matter, it will be a new experience for me. The 22's that I have are just too big for some small clubs that I play. I guess we shall see when they come in May. As for the tom mount, I was thinking of flexibility and ease of set-up. I suppose I can always add the thing later.

Fixxer is right about the sound of the drum and the look of the tom mount. Personally, I don't mind the bass mounted tom holder. Especially if you are planning to gig with this kit. I've got two kits one with and one without the bass mount. I prefer the bass mounted kit because it's easier to set up. I don't notice any difference in the sound of the bass but heah, I'm old skool and that's just opinion. Congrats on the kit and post some pics when it arrives. :)

Thanks for the advice. I realize that ultimately it is up to me to decide. I agonized over what color to buy for a long time so this is just one more thing to ponder. I think the way to go is probably to go ahead and get the mount. Having said that, I'll probably change my mind sixteen times before ultimately deciding.
