yesterday i had done a session for a singer/songwriter and the studio we recorded at had the a beautiful birch/maple masterworks kit. i opted to use it over my tama starclassics and i was not let down. these drums sounded clear and punchy, yet also had the warmth and body. they looked beutiful as well.
if the Pearl boys and girls could just start making REAL gong bass drums i would be a convert :-). please please please carl the gong bass thing is what keeps many players with tama. if pearl just made a gongbass iwth the 22" head over a 20" shell, there would be no reason to stay with starclassic...

That would be kool, but their molds only fit 18 inches, it would have to be a 22 by 18 or otherwise.

vanilla coke, which mold are you referring to? they already make 14" x 20" shells they would just have to re-tool the lugs to except a screw at an angle (45 degree, i think). then of course they'd have to create a 22" metal rim, or just use a shallow wood hoop, a la DW. the reason for the head being over sized is it sits on the shell differently then if it were a uniform 20" head on a 20" shell. its the timpani concept.
i know there are a few Pearl players that have true gong bass drums (jonathan mover, and mark brezeki) however i think they just used the tama hardware on a pearl shell.

Paul... you're right, dennis is the highest profile pearl player to use a gong drum. however he is really only using a mounted one sided standard bass drum. his GB doesn't have the oversized head. Jonathan Mover and Mark Brezecki have the tama type hardware on a pearl shell.
i guess if the Pearl crew won't make DC a true gong bass i can just kiss my wishes good bye... i mean its Dennis...
