I don't no what I'm doing wrong here so please help me!

I have my cymbals fairly flat and not really high up. they are tilted a tiny bit twoards me. They are eating through my sticks and is this supposed to happen. I just got a new set of vic firth dave weckl's on saturday and by tuesday (today) they look like they've been through world war one and two! is this supposed to happen or not?

Some one give advice please because stick ar not cheap in ireland. the dave weckl's cos 14 euro!

saddly, it's perfectly normal. breaking sticks, and breaking them frequently, is a fact of life.

Yep...
I pretty much wreck a set after two rehearsals. Buy them in bulk, it'll save you $$ in the long run.

You might want to buy some thicker sticks. Maybe try a different size.

it may not be your cymbals (as in your crashes) that do the most damge but infact your hihats. or it may also be that your playiing alot of rimshots.

wrap your sticks in electrical tape right when you buy them... it looks cool for a while...lol... then the tape starts getting torn and looking like crap... BUT... your sticks won't be splintered... oh, and if you do this wrap your sticks only 4 inchs up the stick... if you wrap them too far your sound on rim shots might suffer... hope that help'd... mikeym

although a lot more expensive, oak sticks seem to last way longer and not splinter so much. my local drum shop doesn't carry any, so i just buy hickory by the dozen.

How much does a pair of stick cost where in england and america and stuff. i used to use a make called nova because they were reall cheap but i broke 6 sets of them in 5 days!!!! so i chaged to vic firth and they last longer and are much better but they are MUCH more expensive! i hada set of steve gadds and they lasted almost a month!!!!!! but there was a big chip in it and it went right to the middle of the stick and then the stick actually split down the middle! i didn't know sticks could actually split down the middle like that!

Is there anything you can do with a pair of sticks the nylon tips comes of one of them?

do as i do, don't throw good money after bad i pay £2.50 for a pair of cheap sticks, i have tried them all, and none last any longer than the next pair ( unless you buy those carbostix ). i use 7A nylon tips, so they are quite a bit thinner than 5A's. and seriously, i have had no problem at all with the cheapo stix !!

I use Vic Firth, Pro Mark or Regal Tip 5A, Nylon tip sticks. I've never lost a nylon tip. As for them getting chopped up--I have heard it said the proper way to hit a cymbal is so the stick hits flat across the face of the cymbal. Not where the stick strikes the edge of the cymbal. My sticks don't get all chopped like you guys are talking, and I've been using the same pair for over a year now. And I play rock--progressive--metal, so it's not like I don't hit 'em hard.

When I first started out I got 3 pairs of "Player's Choice" 5A Maple Sticks, wood tip. They lasted about a month total, mostly because I was working out a lot of bugs in my technique. Then went to Vic Firth 7A Nylons. Worked for a while, but didn't give me the right sound, and always felt too small in my hand. About 6 months ago I started using the Vic Firth 8D wood tips. Best stick I've ever played. Thin and light enough for acoustic gigs, but durable and beefy enough to really take a beating. Also, if you care, I started using Vic Firth AJ6's for my jazz gigs, another great stick, but only for light situations. Once I got stuck with a last minute gig, playing rock, and the only sticks I had with me were the AJ6's. If you know about them, you'll understand why I played the whole gig with the butt-ends of the sticks.

nylon tips will give you a sharper sound on your cymbals... especially the ride cymbal... if you want a more layed back sound go to wood tip... mikeym

I stick to 7A nylon tips, at the moment I think it's a set of Pearl sticks I've been using. In my experience, nylon tipped sticks tend to last a lot longer as they've got less chance of splitting right from the top. If the tips come off, glue them back on if you can find them. Otherwise just bash them down every so often to stop them coming off in the first place.

I think you should go to your local drum retailer and buy sticks by the bulk. Pro-Mark sells packs of 12 pairs, assorted tips and sizes. But there is nothing you can do about saving a broken stick.
