Im buying an Elx in the next week and I still cant decide on getting the standard or the fusion set. I want to add a floor tom to make it a 6 piece set but i dont know if i want all hanging toms or floor standing toms or both .... just give me a little feedback on your prefrences and why...

it depends on what music u play. rock= standard, jazz= fusion or jazz configuration. If u want a general opinion get fusion cuz then u can add a 16" floor tom instead of an 18" floor tom. those just suck and are way to *** big. hope this helps. I got a fusion by the way.

well can i buy a floor standing 14 inch to add between the 13 and 16,, on a standard set ,,, is the 16 inch a hanging tom for the fusion,,, does it really make that much of a diff. on what i play considering if its a fusion or not,, and how tuneable are they?

I recently answered the same question with a fusion kit. I heard that the odd size tom in the standards makes tuning the kit more difficult. If you really want the 18" tom, you can always add it to a fusion setup...

I've got an EX standard kit. It sounds great!
the main difference between a fusion kit and a standard isthe bassdrum. In fact, if you consider that bassdrum and snare are the most important drums in your kit, the fusion bassdrum (18") has got a lower/deeper sound. This is great if you play rock! tom tom are smaller, of course, but the sound is, I think, not really different. You have a more "cutted" sound with a fusion and this makes in your play more impact. Fast and cutted.
With the standard kit you have a lower sound (talking about the toms), but even a bit "longer" sound.
In the fusion kit you have also a difference between the deep bassdrum and the higher toms and it makes a kind of separation. If you make a 16" floor tom you'll have, in my opinion, a kit that covers lot of sounds; more versatile. Just one line more; I think that you shouldn't take a mounted tom adapted to the cymbal stand. Try to make your toms/floor toms independents from the Cymbal stands (more confortable).
This is only my opinion...
hope I helped you

oh Ok, sk8drummer, I didn't know Forums were called fusion or whatever. I thought it was just forum. I know they have 3 different setups you can get but I didn't know they were called anything other than just forum.I have the 22"x16" bass also with the 2 bigger toms--12" and 13". What's that one called? If it's considered a fusion, I never knew that.

Go with the fusion. I regret getting the standard sizes. They are a lot harder to position....(I like my toms low)

i have a fusion, 10-12-14 tom sizes. nice definite size differences on all 3 , much easier to get a balance. you have a "rock" size ( notice only 1" difference on the rack toms )...
rock size :- 12" , 13" rack/bass mounted toms & 16" floor tom
fusion :- 10" , 12" rack toms & 14" floor tom ( which is stand mounted unlike the legs on a "rock" kit )
hope that clarifies the difference :)

"Standard" sizes= Toms:12x10,13x11 Floor tom:16x16 BD:22x16
"Fusion" sizes= Toms:10x8,12x9 Rack tom:14x12 BD:22x18 (in my case 22x16)
"Jazz" Configuration= Toms:10x8,12x9 Floor tom:14x14 BD:20x16

Fusion kits are heaps better than standard kits in my opinion. You can easily add a 16"x14" or 16"x16" tom to a fusion kit, it doesn't matter which. (i would get a 16"x14" though.) People say standard kits are for rock but i play hard rock/ metal and have a fusion sized kit. For live gigs your drums will usually be miced and so u don't have to worry about "projection issues". The intervals between the sound of 10, 12, & 14 toms is more evenly spaced too. Definitely get FUSION sizes!

this is the feedback i needed,, thanks ,, but is the sound there? I like good deep sounding toms and I dont want to miss out on that with smaller sizes ,,, what do you think?

Definatly go with the Fusion. As it was metioned before the standard is very hard to position and to get a decent interval between the 12 and 13 toms is hard. With a good selection of heads a fusion kit with the 22 by 18 bass is the way to go.

FX 725HC NEW for 2002! Includes a 22"x16" bass drum, 10"x8", 12"x9", and 14"x12" rack toms, Thats a fusion size kit, notice it has a different serial number to the other spec, plus a choice of 20 or 22" Bass ( although i could only get a 22" ) :( they call the 14 x 12 a rack tom !! even tho it hangs where a floor tom would stand on the floor ... i hope that clarifies :D

Post all Export Select, Export, and FORUM SERIES topics here.
Get it right man damn.

LOL. OK. Sorry, I guess you did start this thread. I don't know how we got off on Forums. But to bring things back down to earth, if I had it to do again I would get fusion sizes, be they Export or Forum or whatever. The 12's aren't hard to tune but the 13's sometimes give me fits.I do have an 8" and 10" concert toms, but I think they would sound better as regular toms. When I bought my Forums, I was told that any size tom available in that series could be ordered seperately from Pearl. I just didn't feel like waiting 3 months for them to come. Which is why I got the 2 12" and 2 13" toms. So now that we're all on the same page, which ones have you decided on??

I am going to get the Fusion sizes. 10, 12,and 14. Then as soon as I can Im going to get the ElX-6F (which is a 16x14 stand mounted floor tom) and a 8X10. But ,,now I dont know if I want to wait and try to get one of the new color ELX's that I saw on the NAMM page. Those colors are awsome.
What do the concert toms have different?
Mohadiib1

The concert toms have no bottom head or hardware, and they're not as deep. 8"x 5" and 10"x 6". They sound kinda Jamaican.

J_Myers, I have a fusion setup (10,12,14,16,all rack toms) which I have tuned very low(just until the wrinkles on the heads disappear), and the sound I get would rival any standard kit setup tuned regularly. I get very deep sounds from the toms, almost as if the drums were 12,14,16,18. You'll just have to experiment with tuning to get the sound u want, but I don't think you'll be disappointed with the fusion setup.

This is great,, just what I wanted to hear.. What kind of heads do you have ,, and do you use any type of muffling on the toms or bass
JEFFa.k.a.ANIMAL
02-06-2003, 04:52 PM
J_Myers, I use two-ply heads on all toms, snare(coated), and batter side of the kick, and the stock reso heads. Powerstroke 3 on the reso side of the kick. I sometimes use the Aquarian studio rings on the toms only because I like the mellow, focused and warm sound it gives the toms. I have a piece of mattress pad foam, about 17" long, rolled up and held together with tape, inside the kick just touching both heads on the kick for muffling. Besides that i don't use any other muffling.
Just wanted to add that I've been seeing a lot of "fusion" kits (10,12,14 all hanging) with add on 16x16 floor toms lately. Whether it's from the drummer's choice or what was available fast, I couldn't say.
I WILL say that TAMA has a Starclassic (or Performer) 5pc set listed from NAMM with an 18x22 bass, 8x10, 9x12 toms, and a 16x16 floor. I forget the new classification name used, something like power accel? Drum size groupings start with the drummers, not the manufacturers. SO they must be seeing it around, too.
So get whatever you think you think you'll like the sound of.
