also a 14x8 wouldnt be poppy it would be fat sounding
7x12!!!!!!!
TRUST ME on this one! The Pearl 7x12 Maple snare sounds EXACTLY like that style snare. I love that snare. It's not a matter of IF i'll get it, it's WHEN i'll get it!.....

Actually, Peavey makes a snare that a friend of mine has, where the Maple (I think?) shell is so thick, the drum doesn't even have lugs. The tension rods are drilled straight into the drum itself. That snare had lots of pop...& was very loud...

birch has more pop than maple does, birch pops more and maple cracks more

I just prefer a nice solid WHAP to a gunshot crack on my snare. Just old I guess. Something more like Philly Joe Jones or Ringo, as opposed to a Weckl CRACK.
But I knock no drummer's taste otherwise. Play as you please!

I voted 7x12. The 7" depth secures a deep sound, thump if you will, and the 12" diameter sercures a high pitch. Combine those two and you'll have a wooden pop if it's a wood snare. The Pearl 7x12 snare is amazing. It has the exact sound you're looking for and is quite versatile when you consider the size. A 5x12 snare would have more crack due to the depth.
Another option would be a 6x13 10+ ply maple snare. This would have a bigger sound.

i say go with 13 inch and put on die cast would have more pop than a 12 inch with 2.3mm

I have a Starclassic Birch snare. It sounds pretty close to that. Mine is a 5.5x14. It sounds very close to that (minus the little ring I have since I don't have anymore moongel) But when I put RemOs on it, the sound is too fat. But I say go with a birch snare like mine and you can get it to sound like that.

My guess would be the 5x12 it's small and shallow. It also can depend on the room. What sounds good in my basement doesn't always sound good at the gig.I usually bring two snares and use which ever sounds the best. Sometimes you can just adjust your tuning or snare tension to open things up .
