What's the deal with the new MSX Masters retro-finished kits? They look awesome, but are they maple? Birch? Mahogany? Details! We want details!

It's basicly a MRX with a wrapped finish. 6 ply maple shells.

Red Onyx looks killer. A red onyx MSX might be my next kit instead of a regular MRX.

royal gold looks like the coolest to me, not a big fan of the red onyx. i have an old sonor drum in our bands practice room that we are using as a trash can that is in red onyx rap, almost identical and i really dislike it. the royal gold looks really liquidy and intricate. but i dont know.....laquer vs. rap ...hmm.......what shall i do when i order......hmm.....rap is nice, but ive had an export with a rap for a while now and im getting sick of it..hmm.

The white one is nice, the others don't do much for me. How 'bout some sparkle finishes!

Good question, Spence. I really like the White Marine Pearl (can you imagine playing a set of Pearl Pearls?), but generally prefer a lacquered finish so you can see the natural grain of the wood.
Is the wrap so thin that it affects that sound of the shells as little as a coat (or five) of lacquer does?

As cool as the red looks, the white pearl is flat out beautiful and its a color that I could see myself liking for longer than a few years . . . maybe I should go for the white instead . . .
anyways, from everything I've read, wrap supposedly makes drums sound slightly darker than their laquer counterparts.

In my opinion wraps dont effect the sound THAT much. Of cource they affect it a little but not too much.
In the early days of wraping drums it was a huge difference because the technique wasn't that good. But nowadays.... Why should dw wrap their drums if the sound gets much worse then laquer?.....
The con is that the sound gets a little darker (but this is only a con for some people, some may like this), and the main pro is, that wraps are cheaper than laquers....
I like the royal gold best, followed by white marine. Both are great finishes. Personally i don't like red one at all...
Think of an Royal Gold MSX with these specs:
18*24 (2)
7*8
8*10
9*12
9*13
14*14 Floor
16*16 Floor
16*18 Floor
12*14 mounted to the left
Tico Torres Signature Snare......
I NEED MONEY!!!!

Wooooo MSX rocks!! Did someone notice that the bassdrum-hoops come in natural maple-finish? A detail, but i love it.
First I was planning to but a MRX in Silver Sparkle with black hardware but now I'm going for a MSX in White Marine Pearl. Does someone know if the MSX can be ordered in chrome, black, gold and satin hardware-finish? I suppose so, in that case it will be a MSX White Marine Pearl with black hardware:
22x18
10x9
12x10
14x12
16x14
14x5 Ultracast snaredrum

IMHO the white one is only one I would think of taking it... And I donīt like that much either. But as I said, thatīs just my opinion.

to whom ever asked, my name (appnothingpearl) is from my bands name , we are called (yes this is our name) "Apparently Nothing". we might be getting signed very soon and are in the process of recording our first album in two different studios. and i will be using my export for 8 of the tracks. not the greatest set in the world but it will do....

I just got my reply from Gene on the MSX finishes. My question was,
can I order a BRX with the MSX finish. You can order it in the MMX but
a BIG NO for the BRX. Is it just me, what the hell is the diff from
a 4plyMMX, a 6plyMSX or a 6ply BRX birch kit. It makes no sense
not to offer all the finishes on all the shell options. So many other
companies give us the options of choosing many finishes and options.
I dont want to hear the argument that the Master Works will give you
the color options so go and order one of those. That makes no sense at all,
a Master Series kit is a top of the line set of drums and should offer us
the basic choices of finishes. Dont get me wrong I have purchesed 3 sets
of Pearls and think its a great company but the restrictions on choices
has been turning my thoughts over to some other drum makers.
I think Pearl needs forget about some of the old school ideas and at
least look at some of the new.
Thank you for allowing me to state some of my ideas on your great forum!!

well its cause brx are400 bcuks cheaper....if you really wanted that msx finish on a brx you could probably just pay an extra 400 im im pretty sure they would do it
These kits are even more cool in person. I haven't seen a picture yet the does the Red Onyx justice.
