early ( 70's ) kool and the gang, james brown around the same time, parlaiment/funkadelic, there are zillions of bands under the funk Genre, or you could try the jazz-funk stuff of bands like brass construction etc..

George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars, Parliament Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder....that's all I can think of right now.
