I have been looking into building my own kit from scratch and I have some questions.

1. How are the quality of Keller Shells in comparison with Pearl's Masters series shells?

2. I want a lacquer finish, possibly a burst or fade, I don't think i could do this myself. Is there any companies I caould send the shells to to have them finished?

Thanks for your help

First of all, Keller shells are of the finest quality. They are of equal quality as the masters shells. DW used them before they acquired the facilities to fabricate thier own shells. Pork Pie, Spaun, Merrick, Ayotte, Noble and Cooley, Fibes and countless other manufacturers use keller shells theres absoloutely nothing wrong with them at all.
Second, although you probably cant do a fancy lacquer job yourself, any custom auto shop would easily be able to do the job for you and you can also send your shells to Pork Pie and have them done, and trust me they do some of the most AWESOME finishes Ive ever seen.

Later,
Michael

There are some keller shells on ebay right now for cheap. www.phattiedrums.com is the cheapest good custom company out there that I know of. If you don't want to do it yourself they are good. Conway is cheaper but Phattie has good endorsers. Just my 2 cents

can u get keller shells in diff woods? ive heard of maple, but what about birch or a mix? that would be cool if i could build my own kit, but costly. id rather have pearl do it for me!:p

Pearl drums look much better than those and the quality might be good but not as good as Pearl.

I have 2 questions. How come Pearl doesn't offer a 20 ply snare or bass drum option and does phattie make 26 by 26 kds?

pearl doesnt need to offer a 20 ply shell
the pearl 10ply is equivalent to a keller 17 or 18 ply shell.
and the combitnation of woods alow you ot customize your sound.

Yes, phattie does offer 26x26 kicks, however, that will not allow you to customize your shells plys and whatnot.

NO. keller shells are not available in different woods...UNLESS you are willing to buy in MASSIVE quantities of shells...about $25,000 worth of birch, or mahogany shells in 8' lengths.

Keller is now making birch shells too.

Noble & Cooley actually make their own shells. They're an anomaly in this way, being a small drum maker who makes shells.

Ah yes, the land of "custom" custom orders.
Phattie will charge you 15% more for birch.

Ayotte has never said what company shells they use. They won't because they don't want some bozo going out and wasting money on Keller or Jasper shells thinking they can make a kit that sounds like an Ayotte.

yeah but ayotte has alot more optoins and there alittle more reasonable in comparison. i mean they do make there own mounting system and lugs etc.

Yes, but I don't believe its done in their facility. They designed it all and its probably made overseas and shipped to them. And only to them.

most likely,no.
but if you were to compare the two, i,d get an ayotte. because i can get any size an myriad of finishes. and if i were so crazy abot black hardware(and i am ) i'd get them done by a outside company theres one 10 minutes from my home. noble and cooley offers nothing incredibly special. homemade shells/ lugs or not. just a very old (archain) reputation in the studio. i wish they would bring something new to the table. (make me alittle prouder to live in this ****ty state) this is kinda funny , you're from canada i'd figure you'd be more supportive of ayotte . and you'd think i'd love noble and cooley being two hours away from there company!

I am probably the biggest Ayotte geek there is. I have all the Ayotte clothes for God sakes. People I know call me Ayotte.
