go with the brx 5.5, thats what i have and when u crank it, it sounds amazing, similar to most vented snares, but not like chad sexton's vented snare which is very metal like, the brx is very quick, and it has that nice woody kind of sound to it, some people love it, some people dont, you have to try

How loud is the birch snare compared to a metal snare? Could you play rock and/or metal with it?

It is a great drum. It is incredibly sensitive - more so than what I thought it would be. But at the same time - it has a huge amount of tone. The drum resonates hugely and has a lasting sustain. You can control it though, but if someone is looking for a snare that is very resonant and sensitive - this is your beast. Ive recorded about 10 songs with it, and you can get a fairly different sound out of it if you change heads/tuning. I actually had wood hoops on it for about 2 months and it sounded fantastic.
Im actually looking at getting another snare soon, something that I can use as a secondary snare - like one of those new Firecracker snares - something cheap, but effective.

Do you know what Matt Sorum's snare sounds like back in the Guns N' Roses days? Well that's birch. Very dry and projects very nicely. Birch snares tend to have a higher fundemental pitch or tone to them because of the nature of the wood. But tuning down if you want a fat thuddy heavy metal sound can be done with birch and birch would be the perfect wood for that.
