Lay the butt of your stick flat on your snare drum head. Maybe an inch inside the hoop(you will learn to vary it later, for different sounds and textures). Now keeping the butt of the stick on the head, bring the other end of the stick, or shoulder down onto the hoop or rim of the snare drum. The sound should produce a clean click sound, make sure the butt of the stick is on the head though, when you come down with the other end of the stick. For a bigger sound, reverse the operation, and put the tip on the snare batter head.

Okay!!!!!!! Thanks a ton!!
And if you want a slightly more solid and cutting cross-stick sound, make sure you position the stick so it connects with the rim right over a tension lug.

playing country the cross-stick is a very important part of my technique.. thesr guys have described it correctly.. using a hickory stick hales make it cut better.. but, i use a lp jam block ( blue) mike with a little EQ and verb on it..same effect and little more convienent for quciker changes

If you learn how to play open handed, it creates a lot of opportunity not to use that jam block. Just a thought, because i used to use a jam block for the same reason, till i opened it up.

beat is right..
i play both cross and open, and i'll do polyrythmns on the jam block while i am playing.. i use the cross-stick more on ballads and softer tunes, sometimes i used both in deifferent sections of the song.. i use the jam block more on louder and faster tunes cuase its cuts well.. i have it , my electronic drums , and kick in monitors..

I'm glad you asked, Cut--I wasn't sure of the term either, though I'm familiar with the technique.
BTW, if you cup your hand on the head while hitting the rim, you get a nice, fat, CHOCK sound--almost like hitting a largish block of wood.
This forum is soooooo great. There really aren't any stupid questions here--except the ones you don't ask; the ones that you wind up wishing you had asked in the first place!

Back at the question at hand....
I was having a problem going from snare beats to cross-sticking in a fast paced song. My solution was a "moon block" located near my snare. I use it when playing two handed patterns on the hats and can't get the stick on the snare fast enough. It is really close in sound to a cross-stick just not as "beefy".

I know this kit who can't cross stick so he just hits the rim. Needless to say he is the worst drummer I have ever heard. So tasteless, but still.
