This might sound like a stupid question but is there any hi-hat pedal that opens the hats when pushed as opposed to closing it? Thats how i always thought hi-hats worked when i was little.

No, I've never heard of one. It's definitely possible to make a Hi-Hat stand that is played "reversedly" (is that a word?). But you have to keep in mind that if the pedal was pushed to be opened, then it would be pretty hard to do a loud "chick" sound playing the pedal un-opened since gravity only works one way. It would take a lot of effort to play upwards, that's like flipping your snare drum upside down and hitting it upwards, you know what I mean? It could be a good idea though, let's say maybe for ska drummers...

I have worked on the idea. I have a prototype that needs building. I also have the law on my side so if anyone tries to use that idea I can sue them. I took the precautions of sending the plans and ideas to myself through registered mail and get witnesses to sign and what not. All I need to do is build a prototype. I have already talked to Yamaha about it and waiting to hear from DW.

Well, as the law is on my side I would try my chances at sueing them.

The only problem I see with the reverse hi-hat idea is you get a k-c-i-h-c sound instead of the normal c-h-i-c-k sound.

Then you know that someone will sue because it's not what they wanted to hear...

Well, I began working on this idea in 1985, I have built a prototype, and am currently marketing the product under the name: Speed-Hat in the United States. The patent is applied for. I would assume that Yamaha and DW would have had their patent lawyers check for applied patents before leading you on.

is the stand that you guys are working on suppose to be the main hi-hat or a remote hat. I'd like to see a remote version so you'd be able to open the hats when playing a double bass pattern.

Did you do anything other than apply for a patent? Did you mail the plans to yourself and get witnesses?

I believe he did, he also probably mailed it to himself while he forced his neighbors at gun point to witness him putting it in the mailbox.
