I am seriously considering getting a snare in Rootbeer Fade. I would really like to get it with gold hardware. I looked in the new price book and it didn't say anything about different hardware colors being offered. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Ok. Thanks, too bad there's no gold hardware yet....

The price guide can be found in the New Pearl Catalogs and Price Lists at the top of this forum.

Stupid Questions:

Why would it take so long to get a hardware finish other than chrome?
Isn't the Reference Series hardware the same as new Masterworks for the most part? I am assuming that they have been manufacturing the new Masterworks hardware for a few months now. Surely they do not fabricate the hardware for each order. Don't they just stock each finish in a warehouse as they continue producing hardware?

I have attached photos of satin chrome and gold with Masterworks.

Maybe the only order issue would be the snare strainer since it is a new line. Can someone enlighten me or give an opinion? Thanks

I'd like to know if Pearl actually makes thier lugs and powdercoat them in house. That might be the problem, if it's done by a 3rd party powdercoat company. Does pearl actually own their own casts and dies, what about those stainless stell rods, are those outsourced at all?

I still think it's time for Pearl to do some in-depth presentation of their actual facility. I'd like to see how Pearl manages to make all these drumsets, snares, concert and marching gear, hardware, pedals, etc... and to see the packaging and warehouse areas or facitilies.

u cant complain bout lack of hardware finishes, this is why they still have MW. the point of the Reference is like a MW in stock specs. if u want the reference sound in a fancy finish or size or something, then u have to pay the little extra and get MW

But you can't get 20 ply snares in Masterworks and you can't get gold hardware in Referance. So no Pearl 20 ply snares with gold hardware without buying the hardware separately.

Fixxer is right. A huge amount of drummers, male drummers, are becoming more concerned with colors of this and that, rather than the shell first.

Anytime someone compares Pearl to Ocdp or some other company that outsources everything on the drum, the first replies are always, COLOR THIS, COLOR THAT.

Colors of this and that, are what your sisters and her friends complain about when they go shopping, or they are doing their makeup.

Pearl obviously doesn't cut their own trees and cast their own steel, but my guess is there is a lot of involvement and coordination with 3rd parties.

They get the job done, though.

Does ANY drum company make their own lugs?

Does ANY drum company make their own lugs?

Most of them have other co's manufacture them, maybe with the exception of Yamaha, but what is important to note, is that Pearl and alot of these other guys that have been around a long time are forking over the huge amount necessary to create a new design every few years. It costs alot of money, but it gives them more of an identity, and IMO respect.

At least OCDP finally got around to doing that, even though it looks very, very close to a classic Sonor design.

If I am gonna spend that kind of dough on drums, or anything for that matter, I will get what I want. If I happen to like black hardware, then so be it. It has nothing to do with girlie men.

Sound comes first, but I like the look too. Nothing wrong with that. I'll just wait.

Just a sidenote... for those *****ing and those who will wait... Reference is still in the test market phase. They are quite certain that Reference will sell, but rest assured, if everyone sits back and waits, you will not see 20ply snare drums in Masterworks or ANY line next year. They are still waiting to see if the market reacts well. If Pearl doesn't see some serious sales in the next 12 months, or fails to garner interest in mixed woods, you won't even see Reference'd Masterworks drums.

If you are interested, buy the drum. czx is right; this is drums, not a bloody pony show :D

I don't care if you're a traditional drummer or if you like change, but I can tell you all that the Reference series kinda grows on you. I was going to settle with Masters until I read more about the Reference series and frankly......YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY POOR OR INSANE TO NOT WANT THIS SERIES! Just look at all the enhancements to the shells, hardware, finishes. Just thinking about it makes me wish my Export kit would sell quicker so I can order one asap. I think Pearl will have no problems marketing this series as it has received nothing but good reviews from all walks of life since NAMM. Keep it up Pearl, ever since seeing that first Pearl drumkit in an old music store here in Whitehorse, you've kept me a devoted "Pearl Drums" only player for 10 years

those are some beasty lugs. why the hell do they have hinges on them?

Chris309
02-23-2005, 05:38 AM
The hinges allow the tension rods to "float" so they always line up perfectly with the holes in the hoops.
