you need whatever you're comfortable with. many "punk" drummers only use 4 piece setups. that doesn't mean you can't use more or less than that. You'll probably want to add some cymbals... definitely a ride. It's all prefrence. But as far as drums are concernd, you don't "need" any set number, and your setup (a 5 piece with roto-toms, correct?) CAN be plenty.

whatever works for you. lots of people claim 4 piece setups are for punk but in fact many drummers use that setup. punk as i hear it is decidely simple, just fast, and so if you get a bit of variety in that would be very refreshing, and add your own unique touch to your music which cant be bad, heh. if it was me, id get a nice big heavy ride to cut through the music next, something like a zildjian zcustom large bell ride or a sabian hh powerbell ride if you can stretch to it, they are good i think. just goto a decent shop an try some stuff out, see what you like. a bit of advice, take it or leave it if you want, is get the best you can afford because otherwise you wont be as happy as you should be and will spend more in the long run. hope this helps

roto toms aren't... BAD... but they're definitely different. if you like it, that's all that matters. your kit, your sound, do what YOU want.

Well if you want the straight answer, e-mail some pics of your set to: http://www.AmIPunkOrNot.orq they will examine your kit, and rate each piece on a "scale of punkness" 0-10. If your kit scores over 500 your kit is accepted, and is offically labeled "Punk." They will then send you your offical "punk" certificate of authenticity (2-5 weeks shipping) and you have to have it signed by your parents, and then fax it back to them.
But wait, has your band registered?? You must first register your band. You have to send them a band photo and they will rate you based on appearance. Things like Mohawks, and chains will help boost your score. If your band collectivly scores over 5000 you can then procede with the rating of your drum kit. Dont forget to have the rest of your band equpiment rated as well. Once everything is done you will get your offical "Thank Goodness I am Punk!" badge and PIN number. You will need these if you ever want to play a gig. If you are ever caught violating the rules, your "punkness" can be revoked. Make sure you study chapter 14 in the Handbook.
My old band got over 60,000 "PP" (Punkness Points) how did you guys do??
BTW. Good idea to post this in every forum, I dont think enough people will see it, when it's in just in one.

Hello,
I played punk back in the late seventies and my setup was as follows 10" 12" 14" roto toms a set of 12'& 13" copper timbales, 14" chrome steel gretch snare,22x18 clear plexi glass kick drum, 15" 16" 18" crash, 22" ride, 14" hihats, all zildjian cymbals a series, sonar hardware. As I remember the toms were great for those half time runs, very melodic. They were also great for mic-ing because of no overtones. We were kind of like Link Ray
meets the sex pistols meets the ramones. Just my opinion or what I used.
Thanks Jack
As the late PaPa Jo Jones said to me before he died:
I'm not behind the time or ahead of time because it's my time
Whenever I think of roto toms, I think of metal. I don't dislike the sound of them...they just make me think of metal. And punk from the seventies is a lot different than it is now. This is a personal opinion so don't spaz on me.

Hello,
I don't spaz, music is a universal language! On the other hand about the set size question, if no is what you want hear then it's no you don't need a big kit to play any kind of music in general.

Id say 90 percent of punk drummers including me only use 1 rack tom a floor tom a kickdrum and a snare. with 2 crashes a ride and hats
