I'm looking into getting a new snare. I don't know whether I should get the MMX or MRX. It will be 6.5" x 14" midnight fade with black hardware. What are the highs and lows of each. Which would yall choose?

well the mmx is only a 4 ply shell so your snare wont really be all that loud, or thick for that matter. i guess it depends on what you want: if you have your heads cranked on your snare so tight its not funny you'll probably want a 6ply for durabillity, plus the 6ply will give you more volume. the 4 ply im not too sure of, all i really know about that is it wont really be as loud, and probably not as versitile as a 6ply. but if i were you i would go with a 6 ply snare.

If you tend to use medium tunings, like a low-pitched, warm sound, and don't need a lot of volume b/c you play miked most of the time, the MMX would be great. The MRX will let you tune higher, has more volume and more cut (it's stronger in midrange harmonics) but it rolls the "warmth" back a bit. I have an MRX 5 1/2 that I've used for situations ranging from pop-rock to metal and I think its one of the best wood snares out there. In my experience, the MRX description in the Pearl catalog is 100% accurate - it has a great "live" sound and it works in all kinds of musical situations. I've recorded with it twice by the way, and the engineers loved it in both cases.

I agree with what everyone has said about the tuning. If the rest of your set is MMX, I'd stick with MMX for the snare.

Last Perfection, I wish i knew what kind of snare the drummer from FATA uses cause his drum sound is amazing. I was able to get my MRX to sound like his snare, at least his recorded sound, but b/c of compression/effects/mic placement I can't say for sure that he plays a comparable drum live. I'll look into it later and put something up on your snare post if I find anything.

I would go with the MRX becase it's louder and more powerful, which is more my preference. Though I have played an MMX in that size and have been very pleased. Either way is a good choice.

its not that much softer. mrx is 6 ply mmx is 4 ply with 4 ply RR so it it 8 plys in some places so itll be pretty close
