I had a similar problem on my MMX 12' tom, try tuning the reso head way up, it solved it for me, makes it quicker with more punch.

Try buying new heads, I recomend Pinstripes on top and ambassadors on the reso side.

I have used both the Remo Pinstripes and the Aquarian Response 2 as batters on both my 14 and 16" toms. I prefer the nice round tone of the Response 2 on larger diameter toms. It made the floor tom sound very musical. The Pinstripes have a more muted quality, not muffled exactly - great attack but not as warm as the Aquarian.

Now I had nothing but trouble with the Aquarians on my 10", it had a bongo drum sound that was very plastic sounding. On the 10", the Pinstripe sounds better. I would like to experiment with a clear Amassador on the 10" batter, I personally find a double-ply head just doesn't sound as good on a smaller diameter shell.

The 12" is a happy camper with either the Aquarian or Pinstripe.

As for resonants, when I had the Response 2's on, I used Aquarian Classic Clears as the resonants. WIth the Pinstripes, I used Ambassador Clears as the resonants. I've never tried mixing the Remo batters with the Aquarian resonants, or vice versa.

I USE EVANS GENERA G2 CLEARS ON EVERYTHING.. THEY SOUND GREAT..

ON A FORUM KIT, TRY SOMETHING SIMILAR OR EVEN DOUBLE PINSTRIPES.. A PEARL SHELL LIKES A FAIRLY SLACK TUNING.. ( i have tuned a ton of pearl kits and i have found this is where they sound the best..).. it takes me about 5 minutes per drum on my masters and session kits to get a good tone

tune both heads the same pitch..remember the theory of operation of a drum: you hit the top and sound/air pressure makes the bottom resonate.. if you'll tune your floor tom heads approx 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns past finger tight, get all the lugs even sounding on the top head, and match the bottom to its frequency that ought to do it.. i've done it for friends on forum kits before and it worked..

best tone will come after heads wear in a bit.. see gene okamoto's tuning article on the pearl website under pearl news

if you want a really wet low sound.... get pinstripes for the top head and the reso head... it'll give you a really low sound...
