Tama Stewart Copeland snare is exactly that. Loud, awesome definition for ghost nostes, not as ringy as a steel drum, and has enough crack to make you go deaf. Give it a shot.

Well, I've used an MRX 5 1/2 for a few years. Still warm like most maple drums, not too dry. The overtones are very easy to control. It's loud, has good body, and its pretty sensitive too. A killer snare all around, it just sounds better at medium-high pitches than at the really high Police-style pitches that I'm addicted to. Thats why I use the Copeland now. I've recorded with the MRX twice and the engineers loved it.
The new BRX 5x14" 12-ply that was just shown at NAMM may be even better to get a really loud, sensitive drum. Had I not just purchased the Copeland snare a little while ago, I'd be checking that thing out right now. Man, 10.5mm thick birch with die cast hoops and a nice 5" depth. That snare could destroy people!

a keplinger, or any decent steel snare. except u might need a little muffling because there can be some crazy overtones. or maybe a copper drum would work too, around a 4x14 or a 5x14.

As long as you dont mind the lack of "Ring", a 20 or 30 ply vented snare will do everything you ask and be VERY loud.

thanx cp999. It's 10-ply 12.5mm. I said it backwards. Its the thickest shell that Pearl makes. Time for me to get more sleep.

the DW Collectors maple snares are very nice. They've got crack, body, and are very warm sounding. I would try out this snare versus the MRX cause I'm sure that's a nice snare too.

That should be a link to a sound description of Jarrah. It is the wood that comes to mind from what you describe. Other companies offer it as well. Pork Pie has Jarrah, Mayer Bros drum has Jarrah, Brady has Jarrah but as a stave, and probably some others.

Cherry is also a VERY nice sounding drum. I think it is one of the most underrated snares out there. This should be a link to a sound description. Again, more self promotion...
