can any tell me how to do a proper rimshot?
Pretty simple really, all you're doing is hitting the rim and head at the same time. The more off-center you are on the head, the more overtones you'll produce (ala Bill Bruford). If you are in the habit of leaving the stick on the head between strokes (you naughty boy) you'll also have to learn to get the stick off of the head/rim after the stroke or you'll kill the effect.
You'll probably have to rethink your snare height and/or angle to position the drum so you can easily go back and forth between rimshots and a regular hit.
A little practice and you'll have it. . .
Good Luck.

You can also lay one stick on the drum (touching the rim and head at the same time) and strike it with the other stick. It's not prectical for most applications, but the effect is much the same.

but it's not a 'proper rim shot' when done that way...
