Would it be possible, or is it possible to order a 6ply
African Mahogany Masters? Since no type of Mahogany
is available unless it is a masters or MW. I heard the
exports or now being made out of poplar. Help please!

As far as I know, the Masters Mahogany Classic (MHX) is the only Mahogany kit using African Mahogany. I had a 2000 Export which was made of 100% 6-ply phillipine Mahogany....and that was the only year that I am aware of that offerred all Mahog. African Mahogany is more rare and for a good reason....check the posts here for MHX and you'll read why people love that rich, sound....worth every penny. Hope this helps......

treetrunk,
Drums made with 6 ply African mahogany can be accommodated through Masterworks.
Hey treetrunk, I have the Limited Edition MHX and love them. These are only 4 ply however. I would love to know how many were made. I got mine for Christmas of "2000" though I don't really know when they were made. I wonder how I could find out? Anyway, as Gene said you would need to go through MW to get 6ply's. Rich.

...would the differences`between the 4-ply MHX and a 6-ply Mahogany be similar to those between an MMX and MRX?....volume etc vs. resonance.

This is the very reason I asked, because as far as 4ply
anything goes, not much volume is going to be projected.
This store out here has a used MHX, (8,10,12,14,16) for
1,800. I played the kit for a minute and liked (LOVED) the response I got, but was just wondering is a 6ply available or ever going to be available in MHX. Thanks for the info.:) :)

Also, I have a 2001 elx. What type of wood is this

"phillipine" (i can't spell, don't mind me) mahogany, such as exports were said to be made of, is VERY different from african mahogany. I've also heard people say exports were made of luan... i'm not sure whether this is a different wood all together, or just a different name.

Don't let volume affect your decision. If you mic up your kit, volume is not an issue. This is something widely discussed among MMX vs. MRX. Pearl's Artist Relations manager recently posted a number of metal/punk drummers who use the 4-ply MMX and you know they have to play loud. The 4-ply has more resonance and I'd think that is one of the attributes of the 4-ply Mahogany MHX....a heavier shell may be more focused, but have less of that smooth rich sound. Then again, I am much more familiar with Maple, so I'm not certain what 6-ply African mahogany is like.....good luck
