i want a 6.5 by 14 inch snare drum. i want a deep massive sound, a snare that has balls, but i still want a nice ring/echo to it without to much thick snap. what drum do you think best fits this description???? can be any brand too. even though most of you have proly never heard it or of them, rick from lifehouse has a great sounding snare, and thats the sound i want. but i dont know what he uses, sonor i think. any suggestions for a pearl, tama, dw , etc would be appreciated.

Thin shells will give you depth. Warm shells, such as mahogany, will give you depth.

Unfortunately, both are not very loud.

Thus if you want deep AND loud you need to find a shell that is thicker but not too thick. In our line, the 6 ply birch or 6 ply maple are good candidates.

If you can wait until March, we'll be offering Snare Drum Club dealers an exclusive 14x5 10 ply birch that you may like!

The Eric Singer model 6.5X14 10-PLY maple with the master cast hoops would do the trick for the sound you're looking for if you tune it mid and not really super tight. Its a great sounding snare IMHO!, and may be just what you're looking for sound and looks wise.

mapex steel blank panther is one nice snare! i have 14x6 but you can get it in 14x6.5 aswell. it has a nice ring to it without being to ringy and has quite a deep sound. i love that snare!!
the best thing to do would be to go try out some snares

try using a birch-shell, it fits your requirements best (boosted lows and highs). for added volume try thicker, rigid shells (10ply or massive) oder switch to metal snares. i think 14x6.5 is the optimum size. with 2-ply drumheds (remo emperor) you will get the possibility to produce deeper snare sounds, for additional overtones ad die-cast hoops and try higher tunings. resonant head tension should not be to tight in any of the above cases.

I was amazed at the depth with an almost metallic ring my Masters birch has. It might work for you. You really need to go listen for yourself though.
