Currently using a Chad Smith Sig snare. Great drum for the money. Its versatile and loud. It'll make a great secondary snare after I buy something more high end.

Black Beauty.

I have a vintage Ludwig 5x14 Chrome/Steel snare that I got used 35 years ago and I have only ever heard one snare I liked as well. It was a Ludwig Black Beauty which is exactly like mine except it is made of brass instead of steel. (and has a dark finish instead of chrome)

I am planning to buy a Black Beauty soon, when I order my MMX kit.

1983 Ludwig Classic Maple Super-Sensitive Snare 6.5" X 14" has a combination of 4 gut snares and 8 wire snares. The gut snares are setup as 2 pairs placed on the opposing outsides and all 8 snares in the middle. Each gut/wire is individually tensionable with a set screw on the butt strainer end. The tuning choices (low & fat, high & sensitive) are infinte. It's one very versatile drum. I am looking at the Pearl Symphonic because it has 3 separately controllable sets of snare strainers, which have even more flexibility and are much easier to configure. I've seen the Pearl advertised for around $320 on the web.

I use a Pearl Sopranino 10x6 maple-natural finish snare.
I can tune it low to make it sound more like a pic, or I
can tune it high to make it sound kinda like a cheap
22 pistol. I love it; it is a very versatile effects snare.:D

Im currently playing (both Pearl),14x4 Maple piccolo and Chad Smith sig. I use the piccolo mainly due to it's depth. The 4" depth means I can have the drum at my prefered height which is just about the bass drum. It's hard to explain but it allows the snare to "hang" over the bass. Very metallic without an "O-Ring", and warmth with.

Tama Stewart Copeland Signature (5x14 chrome over brass, 1.5mm shell, die cast hoop on batter). Just a killer drum - loud, senstive, and the clarity is amazing. Soft ghost notes never get lost and this drum cuts through guitar amps like nobody's business. I still love my Chad Smith, but it's gonna take the back seat for awhile.

hmm, difficult question!

iīll pick my Pearl MW 14"x4" snare in Birch/Tamo (wonderful warm, full and wide sound) and the Pearl Free Floating 14"x5" Brass Snare. Best producing the ghost notes, very sensitive and sharp, pronounced sound. i donīt have a "main" snare drum....
i just have those two and i really LOVE them! :-)

I go back and forth between Masters Custom MMX...verm warm, and a free-floating maple piccolo.....very loud and both have ear-splitting rim shots. I think the Mastercast Hoops really enable great rim sound.

01-17-2003, 04:54 AM
yeah, man, thats true!! did anyone experienced a big difference in rim click sounds with master cast or die cast hoops? i at least do, i am kinda rim klick fan, but with the master cast hoops, they are simply not loud enough....

I am down to one snare. I used to carry a back up but I never had multiple snares like a lot of guys do.
I use an old style 6.5x14 Pearl Free Floating snare with a maple shell. The drum originally came with a steel shell so it has Super Hoops and not die-cast hoops and the tension is only adjustable at the strainer, not dual like other free floaters.
I love to watch other drummers sit in on my kit because they don't have to say anything afterwards, I can just see it in their faces when they start out to play my snare that they are knocked out by the tight response. It also cuts really well! I have used it in every conceivable situation and it is always consistant. Great drum!

I use the Chad Smith sig. I love it! I tune it really high for a great popy like sound. Its vary loud with the rim shots and it has great control. I also love the black silver for the shell, it really makes it look sharp.

My favorite snare is 40-ply Vented Orange County 6.5x14 snare. When I took a tour of Orange County Drum and Percussion, I got to see everything! Its the most amazing place because its basically, a garage factory. And they only have about 6 employees. Another one of my fav's was a 7x14 Vented OCDP snare, 30 ply, solid copper. It weighed about 4-5 lbs. Very nice

Peace out~

Well I just found me a superb deal on e-Bay for a 6.5x14" Sensitone Classic, tube lugs, single flang hoops and all. Gene put me on to Sensitone, and there I be. I don't have it in my hot hands just yet, but will be happy to report when it arrives.

Hi DRUMBOO - Yes, I have that site on my browser. I met Eric
in the late 90's when he was playing with Glam Nation. Very nice and very approachable. He even answered a couple of my e-mails. I love his drumming skills. I saw him back in 1987 with
Gary Moore and of course KISS in their non-makeup Revenge days. It was nice to see him mention "Gene Okamoto" in his "Thank-you" section on his Web. Gene and I go back aways
when he lived and worked in San Francisco, and I have nothing but great memories of the both of them. Thanks Drumboo!
and I have to add you have some nice kits. I'm still waiting on my
2002 MMX in purple Storm w/black hardware, hopefully soon.
Now after seeing all the new 2003 Masters lacquers, I wish I would have waited, but isn't that always the case?

Okay if the snare is "as thick as a 30 ply but one." made of solid copper it would be about 30mm thick and that would weigh about 220lbs. So whats the deal?

Tama PA1325 3.5" x 14 brushed alluminium piccolo. A very full bodied drum and great for recording. Warm but still enough crack and sensitivity.

I don't have a picture yet of my free floating snare but somebody is selling this snare on eBay and it is the same steel shell model and vintage as mine. It even has the Liquid Amber maple replacement shell with newer logo badge like mine. The only thing my snare has that this drum doesn't is a Powerstroke3 on top and Richie Hayward's autograph on the shell between the two lugs right of the badge. Yeah baby! Thanks again, Richie!

Hello!

I like the Chad Smith snare. It has a great sound and looks very cool (black nickel finish). Moreover it's not so expensive. (here in germany roundabout 260 till 300 €.

But the Simon Phillips snares (made by Tama) wakes my interest, too. But they so expensive!! :( The 'little' one (12"x5") costs more than 750 € and the 'Gladiator' cost 599 €. But they are so great.....;)

Bye! Freddy

Steven,

If you are looking for a really loud snare...DW makes one that is half wood and half brass. It weighs about 60 pounds and is really loud. (It also sounds good) Marco Meineman plays one. (I went to a clinic he put on)

I have a vintage Ludwig chrome snare (steel)...it is awesome.

I also have a Pearl Masters Maple snare. It sounds just as good as the Ludwig...maybe a bit better because it does not have that extra metallic ring to it. It is a matter of taste.

The MasterCast hoops really make for great rim sounds though. I'd say I like my Pearl MasterCast hoops better than any steel-pressed hoops.

My favorite is a 5.5x14 Keplinger with triple-flanged hoops, rack & pinion strainer, 3mm rolled stainless steel shell. Simply an amazing snare! Produces a nice multi-dimensional sound. I've been thinkin about buying some woodhoops so I'd have the option of switching them around. Just an idea though.

Intrigued, i just called OCDP and talked to a friend and asked about a snare that even remoteley resembles what you are talking about. He said he knows of no such snare and it would not even be a possibility.

A 7x14 30 ply maple snare weighs almost 10 pounds. So in copper it would be 5 times as heavy. They also have never produced a multi ply all metal snare. They never build metal snares in plys, they are always one piece unless the metal is isolated by wood since it would buzz like crazy. He also said they never have produced a Copper shell snare thicker then 1/4" as of now.

Are you sure your not confusing it with something else?.

I have to agree with msnyder...
I just got a 70's Acrolite off ebay for 50 bucks, and I was exactly what I was looking for. However, If I had the cash, I'd like to pick up a Steve Ferrone Sig. Snare.

My favorite snare in my small collection is a 14x6.5 MRX. This snare is too much for some venues, so I'll use a 12x7 Donaho.

I've another Pearl snare on order to go with the MRXs that won't so "in your face" (unless I want it to be) as the 14x6.5

I find the DW craviotto snare the best. The DW snares I have tried react to every little thing I put at it perfectly. It is such a sweet sound. I will have to make sure to compare it to the Pearl maple snares but I am almost sure I would want one as my first snare on my new kit.
