I've only just been able to get me right leg and right arm to play independantly, i've found it quite hard, is this normal? i have been playing 3 weeks... is this a long time to get used to it?

I'm a jobbing drummer in Austin, Texas and although I don't play Pearl presently I am sure impressed with the forum.
Limb independence comes with practice and experience. Do not get too impatient especially given the fact you are in just your first month of playing.
Even if you are not familiar with drum notation there are some excellent books out there for beginning to advanced players.
Do you have a private teacher? This is a great way to quickly progress, working with a teacher that both challenges you and sets reasonable goals with you.
I wish you the best in your drumming Jimson. Don't be too hard on yourself!

I agree with JF here about the teacher issue. always a good idea to get a decent teacher. However, if u dont have a teacher as of current, can i suggest that u dont worry about ure hi-hat leg at the moment and try to attain co-ordination between bass, snare and rythym (hi-hat, ride, etc.) When i started i was impatient to learn complete limb independence and but over time ive learned that this is a gradual process and can be easily acheived if u practice.
Have fun

yeah
I'm playing almost 2 years and I still don't have independent limbs (especially legs) the only thing to do is to practice practice and practice :)
I would recomend paradidles RLRRLRLL or RRLLRLLRRL the idea is that when you stroke with the RIGHT hand you do the same thing with the LEFT leg (and the same thing bout LEFT hand and RIGHT leg), get the idea? this exercise really helped me out and it works even if you don't have a twin pedal.

ive been playing for 3 1/2 years, and all my four limbs are independent, just practice, practice, and practice, all your rudiments, and it will pay back, its like 4 drummers at once.. :D
that exercise by Qbs is really nice, practice it..
also try it with accents somthing like RllrLrr capital means accented stroke
good luck ;) the accents make this really hard for me ;)

RRLLRLLRRL is a five stroke roll, not a paradiddle ;), but he's pretty much got the idea. Also,I wouold recommend u work up independence with ur right and left hand equally.Nothing is worse than playing for a few years, getting to the more difficult stuff, then needing to relearn han syncopation so you can go in and out of playing left hand lead or right hand lead. This also helps so that one hand isnt completely dominant over the other.
Hope this advice helps.

Theres a book that warner brother publications has called "interdependance" it comes with a disc and has TONS of excersises for interdependance. It'll challenge any of drummers of any skill. I've got 10 years of playin in and some of the excercises are still a little complex... but its good for the beginner too!
