I play a lot of Gospel music and have played with artists including Steve Green, Larnell Haris, New Song, Petra, Big Tent Revival, Natalie Grant, Russ Lee, Charles Billingsley, and several others. I play Masters MMX drums though, not BRX. I think a lot of rock and metal drumers use BRX because they cut really well. When playing Gospel though, I prefer the warmer, richer, fuller, more mellow sound of MMX. I think you'll find a lot of gospel drummers using maple drums instead of birch. It just seems to fit the style better. On my kit, I use Aquarian heads exclusively right now. For my Toms I use Studio X Clear for the batter and Classic Clear for the resonance. On my kick I use a Super Kick I and on my snare I use a Satin Coated Single Ply. These heads sound amazing on my MMX kit. My snare really cracks, yet is warm and sensitive. My kick is deep and punchy. My toms are warm, full, and really sing out.

Good luck with your decision.

I have a BRX natural and use aquarian Jack De Johnette series skins. Its great if you are just going to keep it at home or use for small venue gigs. I once took the birch snare and played in a church service with over 2000 people attending. The snare sounded really soft. Birch is more for a controlled envioranment. Maple is suitable for life performance to a huge audience. I have played once with Bob Fitts in Australia, Perth back in 1991. I play for my local church now and our songs are mostly Hill songs. :)
