View Full Version : Best heads for mahogany?

I'm now leaning towards a Master's Mahogany, because I like the lower tones.
But, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for snare/tom heads.
I need something durable because I play hard rock/metal sometimes, but yet something that will have a clear projecting tone, and good resonance.
I just don't want to get a real durable head with quick decay that will sound 'flat'
Thanks in advance!

Well my MHX is due on monday and i plan to use emporers on the batter sides of the toms and ambassadors underneath. I've heard this combo on a Masterworks that was maple with mahogany in the floor toms and lick. It sounded amazing, so i'm hoping it will also on my kit. I'll leave the kick as it comes and i'm not getting a snare as i already have a chad smith.
I still have the stock heads on and the things sound sweet -

I take it you mean remo ambassors both sides?
Yes you are correct. I think you guys should try the heads it comes with before you rush out and drop more $/Pounds on new heads. You'll have to change them soon enough anyway!
The best combination I've found is coated Ambassadors on the tops with clear Ambassadors on the bottoms. Clear Ambassadors sound too slappy for the tops and Emperors take away too much resonance. I'm not familiar enough with Evans heads but I'm sure they make a good equivalent to the Remos.
Of course, I'm not slamming these drums in a heavy metal band so I don't need extra durability. If I need sheer volume I'd probably opt to use my BRX instead of the MHX and clear Emperors sound great on the birch shells.

If you want Evans Heads, go with Evans G1 Coated heads. If you play really, really hard, then use G2 Coated heads... I prefer the sound of G1s, but G2s will last longer...

for snares, i got a steel snare to sound like a DW maple snare, using the EVANS GENERA HY DRY snare head, on the bottem for reso i have stock
for the toms, even tho my drums r PHILLIPINE MAHOGANY which is way under african mahognay, but if u want a metal sound i got it with G2 COATED on top, and G1 clear on bottem

I changed the Remo for an Evans G1 and it is a major improvement.
Hey Murgen, may want to remove the falam patch and stick it on properly ;)
